Beatrice's Story
Hello fellow classmates of 1969. I don't know if you will remember me. I was sort of the quite type. I was picked on a lot growing up because kids, I quess, viewed me as being different. Light, bright and damn near white is what they called me. Then to top it off, I had red hair and freckles. I couldn't help my generics. My grandmother on my father side was a white Irish woman with red hair and freckles and I inherited her traits. As if that wasn't enough, my grandmother on my mother's side was half Indian. So I inherited the skin pigmentation and was labeled REDBONE throughout my high school years. But it's all good.
I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. While I was in the eleventh grade, my father was attacked and left in the street for dead. He ended up being a vegetable (incompetent) for the rest of his life. I was only 15 when it happened. This devastated my mother and she died 6 months later. At the young age of 16, I was foun...Expand for more
d motherless and fatherless. I began my medical training after I graduated high school that year so that I could tend to my father's needs in hope that they would one day let me bring him home. But that never happened.
I moved away a few months after I graduated to live with my Aunt in Newark, New Jersey because things weren't going too well for me here. But I returned home every other weekend to visit my father in the nursing home. I lost contact with the few friends I did have when I moved.
Today I am still the silent type, don't have many friends. After a quite disappointing marriage, I am now divorced. I am the mother of 4 beautiful children and the grandmother of 10. I went back to school and earned my Associates Degree in Computer Science and need a year and a half for my Bachelors Degree. I may go back and get it. But right now, I just retired from being a letter carrier for 24-1/2 years and working part time for 9 years as an administrative lead for the no. 1 car rental company in America. Now it is time for some me time.
