Rebecca's Story
Life
I haven't changed that much since high school:) I am still the geeky gal and I love my life.
On Aug. 21, 2004, I married Patrick Wirkus (Simley '97) after dating for nearly seven years. In April 2005 we bought a two-bedroom house in South St. Paul, where we live with our cat, Pandora and dogs, Stormy and Sky.
I graduated August 2003 with a mass communications (journalism concentration) degree with a minor in psychology. I am not planning to take up any more schooling.
Shortly after getting married, I landed a great full-time job in South St. Paul (Minnesota) as a resident counselor for developmentally disabled adults. In March 2007, I started working as a case manager for a day program for adults with disabilities.
School
Honestly? I would love to forget high school-- I was not happy! I liked college a little more, but I was glad to finally finish schooling.
High school worthwhile because I met two people: Pat (my husband) during my junior year and Maria Bauman (former...Expand for more
ly Maria Johnson). Maria is the only high school friend I even keep in contact with now.
My favorite memory was in sociology, Maria and I were talking, like we weren't supposed to, about what our boyfriends (now husbands) were doing for us on Valentine's Day. We laughed really loud out loud because both of them made us macaroni and cheese dinners by candlelight! Mr. Murr was not amused;) He was lecturing at the time, stopped in mid-sentence and asked, "do you want to tell me what's so funny?"
Those were the days.
Workplace
I was a full-time resident counselor for adults with developmental disabilites from October 2004 to March 2007. Now I am a case manager for adults with disabilities at a day program--I love it.
I also work part time at a golf course in Inver Grove Heights since August 2001. It was my summer job through college and now it's a pretty good part-time job that I can't seem to quit;)
During and after college, I was a reporter at a variety of different newspapers.
