Becky's Story
College:
Graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in political science, 1992. Roomed with Deanna (whom high school classmates will remember) all 4 1/2 years, and we had many funny adventures. Helped edit "The Dialogue", a campus literary journal. Played intramural volleyball occasionally. Tutored kids in a K-6 afterschool program at the Salvation Army shelter for homeless families in Oakland. Memories of weird people on Telegraph Avenue; random people walking around in their birthday suits; pizza from Blondie's and Kip's, Chinese food from the Jade Garden restaurant, burgers at Andy's and Mel's diners, and lots of time at Yogurt Park; the Oakland Hills fire; the Loma Prieta earthquake; reading by the Campanile. Favorite teachers were William K. "Sandy" Muir, George Breslauer, John Smith, Robert Hass, and GSI's Tom Traynor, Gerd Horten and Gavin Helf. Fond memories, even of the nights I didn't sleep.
Workplace:
Currently working at Roseville High School (as of 2005, this writing) -- 7+ ...Expand for more
years so far, altogether.
After college I tried out a number of different kinds of occupations, including newspaper writing, photography, and physical therapy, but finally decided that I most enjoyed working with kids, and ended up working as an instructional assistant in the special ed department back at good old RHS (from 1994-1997, and then after a brief period of experimentation with other lines of work, from 2001 to the present). I really enjoy it, as I'm very fond of the people there and I spend most of my day tutoring students one-on-one in a variety of academic subjects, which I really like, as I am learning new things every day ... or, as the case may be, re-learning subjects I used to actually know. (Truly, I'd have approached Mr. Sinderson's class with a different perspective, had I known that I would someday have to teach another person how to construct a proof in Geometry.) Also, the job allows me a lot of free time (and inspiration) for writing, which is most important to me.
