Becky's Story

Life I am the Executive Director of The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling. I've been here for 7 years and involved with The Soup Kitchen for about 12 years. What a fantastic job, everyday I look forward to coming to work and for this I am blessed. I was fortunate enough to continue my education at WVU and obtained a Masters degree in Community Health Education. I worked as an AmeriCorps Member to finance the education and every moment was worth it. I worked with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and stayed with them for several years, I also loved working with this popualtion, many heroic people and I am still involved with those who are living with MS. I have met so many wonderful people not only living with MS but also who come through the doors of the Soup Kitchen on a daily basis. The Soup Kitchen is an awesome place, we served over 94,000 free meals last year and also bought the Old Central Firestation behind Wheeling Clinic. The Soup Kitchen is entirely funded by this community and we have a great volunteer base as well. I work with an awesome staff who have become my family and its a very good gig, especially for my children. I think they are more responsible and understanding as a result of growing up at The Soup Kitchen! I am so thankful for the supportive people I work with, especially Beth who keeps me laughing and and still see the numbers in the phone book! I am glad I chose to stay in Wheeling, although my parents died over 17 years ago. Scott and I have been married for 20 years, we watched our wedding video for the first time in a VERY long time the other night and laughed hysterically, I actually had my bridesmaids in something resembling TIN FOIL....and they still speak to me. Scott is awesome, he makes life interesting and so much fun, we've had some really hard times (I wrecked and scalped my head a few years ago and then he went and had a heart attack last year)...it's true, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! I love raising my two children here. My daughter Caitlin is a Senior(which I can't believe she's going to graduate this year) and my son Shilling is a Sophmore. They attend Central, it was entirely their choice. I secretly wish they went to WPHS but they love Central. Luckily, Caitlin is the exact opposite of me, very shy and reserved and a great student, great athlete with beautiful strawberry blonde hair and big brown eyes. Caitlin is going to Chatham College in Pittsburgh next year and that is a heartbreaker! I will miss her, however we still get to watch her play hockey - so that's cool. Shilling is very outgoing and also a great athlete (6'2) with a killer smile, (Kelly Stevenson use to call it his "Ronald McDonald Smile"), very funny and smart. Of course they both play hockey, Shilling will play for Central and the Jr. Nailers it was required. Shilling has also taken up Football....FOOSESBALL THE DEVIL! It started out just kicking from all of his years playing soccer- now he's hitting people and gettin hit and it's driving me nuts- it's the only sport I just really don't understand all of the rules...okay NONE of the rules. I drive Scott and everyone I sit near crazy, I have a three question limit with all the Dad's and most of them I went to school with! It's been an absolute pleasure traveling all over the place watching Caitlin and Shilling play sports! Scott has been a great fan of his children as well, he is always the proudest Dad in the stands. It is always nice to see people from high school. I love my friends from high school, grade school, college, work, the beach..... I am still in contact and see so many on a regular basis! Karen, Kathy, Cookie, Beth, Little Scott, Patty, Joey, Nora....and the list goes on, Thank God. I am always interested in meeting up with old friends, I had a lot of fun in school, maybe too much fun! However, give me a call or stop in The Soup Kitchen and check it out! Wheeling has a problem with the working poor and people who need our help, lovely, lovely people who make me smile everyday. -Thanks, Becky School Park View Grade School 1974 Bridge Street Jr. High 1977 Mt.
