Becky's Story

It's funny...if you think about questions you were asked at seventeen ,say, about God or Politics, or War ,you can be sure that you'd answered them as if you were going to feel that way forever and that similar issues would generate the same answers..in theory. We didn't really see it coming...or at least I didn't! Change. We've all gone through it. Are any of us the same as we used to be at 17? 21? Even 35? Or think the same? I was so sure no one writing about the last few decades could capsulize them well. At least I know I couldn't... Too much had happened and I just didn't have that great a memory anymore, STILL... We have, our generation, lived through some very interesting times, and though I try to remember them all from highschool to being a /married/mom/business woman, some of the details escaped me. I've married ( a few times) had children, traveled and worked. My husband Jim and I had three children between us.Then unexpextedly, in my fortieth year, we added another. Our son, Flynn, who was diagnosed with severe Autism at three. I thought I'd had victories and failures my whole life... but nothing was as meaningful as raising Flynn. He has very challenging behaviours. He is totally non-verbal and extremely"involved".He'll be tweny one this year and...Expand for more
if it hadn't been for him, I probably would still be a wild cat!Instead,we learned how to advocate for not only him but for all the other autistic kids we came in contact with. State and Federal Government, Insurance Companies, School Administrators. etc. It feels like we've fought them ALL over the years. We finally settled in New Mexico when he turned eighteen and my husband Jim left his company., New Mexico is a State with more than just the " basic tolerance" for the developmentally delayed. We found it to be the only State in the country that was so well suited to his living needs... as well as being near enough to California to be able to visit. Flynn lives in a home with a few other guys and has adjusted to his new environment. Jim, his Dad,a retired C.F.O, is on the Board of Directors of A.R.C.A., the company that runs the homes and I finally have the time to indulge my passion for art.( also been in a few t.v... shows,"Breaking Bad", "WildFire", "The Sarah Connor Chronicles"and a couple of movies. The movie industry is HUGE in New Mexico...So I replaced my love of ocean to one of High Desert ...And we are back to traveling a bit more again. But there's that word "Change" again. You never really know whats IN that box of chocolates, right? I wish the best for you all. and hope to hear from you.
