Rebecca's Story

Life OCTOBER 2007: After 3.5 years of consistent treatment and an honorable stand, my husband of ~24 years lost his battle with cancer on September 1st. My awesome co-workers donated enough time for me to be home with him his last 7 weeks, and then enough for another 3 weeks beyond that. What a blessing it was. God is in control. Although it was the most horrible thing I have ever seen, even with my medical experience, we had an amazing last 3 days together. He finally had no pain, even in his last minutes. We were able to give him what he desired most...not to be drugged up and to be at home with his family. We don't really have a routine yet. I'm sure that will take some time. My kids are amazing. My friends are amazing. My co-workers are amazing. We have several "surrogate" children around who call us mom and dad. Many of them are spending every other evening at the house with us to keep us company. They are good kids (well, they are all graduated already, but still kids to me). Marcus was the most humble and intelligent person I have ever known. We miss him very much. He was such a beautiful man. NOVEMBER 2006: Life is good. Not entirely, I mean.....I'm so grateful for my family. We are 'us.' And we belong to each other forever. Now that's cool. Mahra will be 2 in March. Time flies for all of us doesn't it?MARCH 2005: Daughter Ashley, 19, just had first child, my first grand-daughter. Mahra - 'beautiful waterfall'...we are very proud. JUNE 2004: I married Marc (the love of my life and absolute best friend) in 1984. We have 3 children (Ash...Expand for more
leigh 18, Melissa 16, Matthew 12). Love my family, love my life. We have come a long way together, that I am proud of. College Great friends. Should have done it sooner. The best memories are the study groups at home and having hubby (chef) come up with awesome goodies to feed our brains. It kept us at home instead of at a steady/study bar. A good thing for my kids to witness, college is a must. It's definately paying off personally. Isn't your profession a tool to accomplish what you wish for personally? Workplace OCTOBER 2007: An unbelievable THANK YOU to all my co-workers who donated 353 hours of PTO time for me to be at home with Marcus and our children during his last 7 weeks with us. Thank you all SO much. From our hearts, Thank you. NOV 2006: New opportunity 10/2005 to join the Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery team. After a solid year I can say it was a very good choice. Plastics is not at all what I expected. A lot of trauma, accident, & birth defect reconstructive surg. Occasionally I go into the O.R., not as much as I would like, but this is a teaching hospital and residents have priority. A lot of history is made here; a lot of positive changes in patients lives. The Attendings in Plastics at Yale are beyond awesome; what a priviledge. MARCH 2005: I am a Physician Assistant for Kidney and Pancreas transplant surgery team at Yale since early 2003. JUNE 2004: What I do is pretty cool. It is very intense though. We will probably move some day. South....to sunny beaches and a less demanding schedule...more time for family.
