Belinda's Story
For over five years now I have been serving as Pastor of New Hope Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Katy, Texas. I love my calling and feel blessed to serve this congregation. I am an adjunct faculty member of the Houston Graduate School of Theology and on the Advisory Board of the Institute of Pastoral Studies. I am immediate past President of the Board of the Austin Seminary Association, which is the alumni association of the seminary.
I am an advocate of interfaith dialogue and one of the founding members of the Katy-West Houston Interfaith Clergy Association. I have lectured at South Texas College of Law and Rice University on various topics, representing a liberal Christian perspective. I have been in ministry going on 20 years, having served several congregations in Central and Southeast Texas, primarily in the greater Houston area. I have been named as one of 50 Outstanding Woman of Houston, by the Friends of Women's Studies of the University of Houston, and this year as Outstanding Woman of Katy by Absolutely Katy Magazine, the publication of the Katy Chamber of Commerce.
I had a career in health care administration for 17 years before entering ministry. It was interesting and rewarding, and my experiences during that time continue to enrich my ministry.
My husband of 40 years, died suddenly October 15 of last year. He was the picture of health, still ran 3 miles a day, was never overweight, ate healthy and had never been hospitalized. To say my life c...Expand for more
hanged drastically overnight is an understatement.
Eight years into our marriage God blessed us with Sam. Sam is an architect with Dillon Kyle Architects here in Houston, where he and my beautiful, smart, sweet daughter-in-law Vanessa live in Rice Village. Vanessa is the Associate Disciplinary Counsel of the Houston Chapter of the State Bar of Texas. She prosecutes attorneys who are charged with ethics violations. Sam was diagnosed with an aggressive type of lymphoma the end of January, 2010, and has been battling it ever since. He now has a guardedly optimistic diagnosis for eventual remission, thanks be to God. In fact, he is is a speaker for the Lymphoma/Leukemia Society of Houston and runs half-marathons to raise money for them.
I still love theatre, but am now relegated to the audience, which isn't so bad here in Houston with so many wonderful theatrical venues. The Alley Theatre is my favorite. I continue to write liturgical dramas for my congregation to produce and enjoy. And I try as often as possible to go to Santa Fe, NM, to visit my sister Rebecca and her husband George, and take in an opera.
I have a little female black Scottie named Lily. She has been a God-send in the wake of Brent's tragic death. She's sitting on my foot right now. Lily is the fourth Scottie I have had and the only one that has been trainable. She does all kinds of tricks on command. She is well-behaved and extremely affectionate, which is very unusual for a Scottie.
