Ben's Story

Here is what I've been doing since high school: After Merced High I went to Merced JC and then on to SF State. As a starving student, living in SF was too expensive, and most of my fellow students commuted to school two to three days a week from their home towns in the bay area. Although I had a great set of roommates, none were accounting majors and it was tough to develop a solid study network outside of the classroom¿ due to the commuter aspect of the school. I spent a couple of weekends in Chico visiting friends from Merced and got hooked. I really liked the town, the people, and the feel of the community, so after three semesters at SF State (and a few more weekend trips) I transferred to Chico. I graduated in 1981 with a degree in accounting and started working for Chevron in their Walnut Creek office. I've been at Chevron since then. I have changed jobs at least a dozen times (accountant, finance analyst, HR Employment Coordinator, Finance Manager, Business Services Manager, Project Leader, etc.) I've moved throughout the Finance and Marketing functions, and am now in the Strategy and Planning group. I have done some travel to Texas, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Singapore, London, Bangkok, but my home base has always been the San Francisco Bay Area (Concord, SF, Walnut Creek, and San Ramon). We like living close to San Francisco so we can go to the Symphony, Theater, and, occasionally, the Opera (saw Wagner's Ring cycle this year). I married Ann Taylor, from Boulder, Colorado, in 1987. We were married in the little chapel in Yosemite Valley. We get back to Yosemite at least once a year to celebrate and do some bike riding. Ann was another bean counter at Chevron. We have twin daughters who are about to start their senior year at Chico State. During their high school years, they traveled with me a few times to Chico. at least twice a year. I still get the same sense of the town, the people and the feel of the community, as I did when I first visited Chico, and now, so do my kids. Both my parents have passed on, my dad in 1988 from pancreatic cancer, and my mom in 2002 from lung cancer. I miss them very much and I wish they could see how well their granddaughters are doing. In terms of music, I played bass in bands while at SF State and in Chico. It was a ton of fun...and loud. It was a great way to meet people and express my inner rock star! After starting my career with Chevron, I auditioned for and joined the Diablo Valley Philharmonic as second chair of the cello section. After a dozen years I had to pull out due to work and family commitments. I only play my cello occasionally now. My brother Paul and I performed at his daughter's wedding a couple of years ago. It was nice to get back into rehearsal and performance mode. I have been riding my bike to work since 1995. The riding season for me is April through September. I get about 2,000 commute miles a year. This allows me to sustain my three pint a week habit of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream without too much guilt. In 2000 I started riding a recumbent bike. It looks like you are riding in a lounge chair. It is very comfortable and very fast on the downhill (very slow on the uphill). My top speed is 63.1 mph coming down Carson Pass (near Lake Tahoe) during the 2009 Death Ride (129 miles, 15,000 feet of climbing). I have had a couple of slow speed crashes (going so slow I couldn't keep the bike upright and couldn't unclip the shoes before it was too late) but they are pretty rare and definitely more painful to the psyche than they are to the body. I finished my first double century ride in 2009: 200 miles, 9,000 feet of climbing in 15 hours. My 2011 riding goal is the California Triple Crown: complete three double century rides in a single calendar. I'll let you know.
