Bern's Story
Attended University of Chicago 1965 to 1969, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. To avoid Vietnam I taught 9th grade mathematics at South Shore High School in Chicago 1969-1970. Attended University of San Diego Law School 1970-1973, practicing general law in California 1973-1977. Moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1977. Employed with the State of New Mexico from 1978 through 2004 as a staff attorney for various departments including Education, Health, and Natural Resources. Married Judy Lunsford Hites, Director of the GovernorâÃÂÃÂs Commission on Disability in 1981 forming an wonderful life and professional partnership drafting several legislative initiatives improving legal rights of people with disabilities and traveling around the world including Komodo Island, Bali, Egypt, Cozumel, England, Paris and much of the US. on to promote Disability rights and directed a "Mainstream Choice" Section 8 housing voucher program. Retired and relocated to Marble Falls, Texas in 2007. Appointed to Marble Falls Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission in 2010. Widowed in May, 2011, no children. Sister, Judith Sherman Asher, M.D. resides in Las Cruces New Mexico. Interests: Gardening, Scuba Diving, Progressive-Liberal politics, Earth Conservation, and "ÂGiving Back". While attending grief counseling after Judy's passing , I RE-MET Patricia Guinn Warner , class of '65, who had recently lost her husband of 40 years Mike. On realizing that we had been classmates since Jr. High we began meeting to talk over old times and give consolation for our then terrible and lonely situation and the amazing coincidence of having both moved to this small town in Texas. Our friendship blossomed and on August 18, 2012 we married.
