Bernard's Story
I guess I can say that I've always wanted to be in the military. While I was in elementary school (Henry B. Gonzales)I was a part of the Young Marines and that carried over to Junior High (E.T. Wrenn).
I quit Young Marines after joining Blackies Boxing Club. I really enjoyed boxing. I can say that I was pretty good at it with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss.
I left Boxing for Army ROTC at Edgewood. I became the first black to be promoted to battalion commander. While at Edgewood I tried out for baseball and football. I was then offered a ROTC scholarship to Prarie View A&M but lost out on that deal due to excessive class cutting. You know sometimes I kick myself about that.
After leaving high school I worked at Kelly Air Force Base for about...Expand for more
a year and soon after I joined the Army on July 5, 1979. My first duty station was Germany. I really enjoyed Germany even though I was shuffled around from base to base due to my job as a teletype repairman. When I first got to Germany I was sent to Augsburg. From Augsburg to Neu Ulm and from Neu Ulm to Schwabisch Gmund. From Schwabisch Gmund to Schwabisch Hall. Here I stayed for about a year and was then moved to Hohenstadt for the remainder of my time there.
My next duty station was Ft Sill, Ok. Ft Sill was not one of my favorite places to be stationed, especially after being caught in a tornado. But I did my time there and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1983.
When I left the Army I was tired of the military at least I thought.
