Bernard's Story
Workplace:
I Work with Mentally Challenged Adults that live in their own apartments. Its under the Department of Mental Retardation called Supported Living. I give them an array of supports they need to survive in the community. We try to utilize all the resources available. I am presently the supervisor of the area I cover. I've been doing this type of work for the last 26 years and can't imagine doing anything else. I work out of a small office, access to a vehicle, and a small budget. I am responsible for variety of job duties. I work with many professional people. Its never a boring occupation and would not change anything.

ing after I retired. The agencies name for the state and the private sector was changed from Department of Mental Retardation [DMR] to Department of Developmental Services [DDS] which was given the name change about 10 years ago due to the stigmatization of the word mentally retarded to be more sensitive to folks with mental retardation now correctly referred to as people who have a developmental disability.
I enjoyed working with developmentally disabled people over the years, but the sad part for me was in the late 1990's when we could no longer expand and take on new referrals to keep the program youthfully alive for growth due to the decrease of revenue in the hard times economically. I miss all of whom passed over the years but have learned from their knowledge, understanding and wisdom. I am now glad to be retired and enjoying my later years of life with my faith, family and friends.
