Bernard's Story
I received my B.A. in Communications/Journalism from Shippensburg University in 1989, with a minor in Music Literature. At Shippensburg, I was a member of many of the music groups on campus. I marched five seasons in the marching band, three as a drum major and one as percussion section leader. I also played percussion in the concert band, and drum set in the jazz ensemble and pep band. In addition to the bands, I was opinion editor at the campus newspaper, and was a disc jockey at the campus radio station, with two years as news director. After graduation and a year off, I returned as a contractor, writing the marching band's field shows and percussion arrangements for five years. I was also a clinician at the George Parks drum major camps at West Chester for two summers.
After high school, I joined the Caballeros drum corps ('85 World Champs!) and retired in 1996.
If you're familiar with Ship and were there during 1985-89, I lived at Kieffer Hall for two years, then at 334 East Fort Street with Jeff Benner, Dave Stoner, John Grunwell, Chris Darcy, Gary Woomer and Steve Godfrey. We were the guys who used to put our speakers up to the window and ...Expand for more
play "comedy" bits to everyone sunning themselves on Kieffer Beach.
After graduation, I worked for Suburban Trends Newspaper in Butler, where I eventually was named Managing Editor. After three years, I joined the consulting firm M.F. Smith & Associates, Inc., in Morristown, where I was Managing Editor of their association management group for four years. I then moved to Merck-Medco for five years as Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, where I led the launch of the company's intranet and other internal communications. I then joined Masterfoods USA in Hackettstown, as Communications Manager. I later spent two years as a communications contractor at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation in East Hanover. I'm currently the global communications manager for two of the large IT departments at Roche Pharmaceuticals.
I married Liz Wernig (Class of 1988) in May 1995. On June 10, 1999, we had our first child, Sheridan Ann. Our second, Kevin Edward, was born December 19, 2001. We now live in Andover Township, New Jersey, where I coach softball, baseball and soccer, and I'm the Assistant Cubmaster of Pack 181 in Andover and Den Leader of my son's Wolf den.
