Beth's Story

Graduated from Western Michigan in '77 and enjoyed a fun and interesting career starting with a chain of record stores and eventually ending in marketing position with Hiram Walker, Inc. Worked in brand management on a variety of liqour products as well as new product development. Loved the challenges and the travel. Married in 1987 to Dave, engineer (and survivor) at Ford. "Retired" from marketing career in 1988 to stay at home and raise first baby, a daughter, then a son in 1990. Tried to stay active in outside organizations and volunteer groups because being a stay-at-home mom is just not my nature. One organization Dave and I were very active in was Waterford Hills Road Racing, which we loved, but family and financial considerations caused us to cut back on our involvement there. Also started and ran a jewelry business that had a fair amount of success. It was fun to get out and meet people an be part of a creative community. While living in Walled Lake, and working on trying to move out, we were in a pretty bad car accident that really messed up our lives for awhile. It's like John Lennon said, "Life is what happens while you're making plans". (A crazy lady crossed the center line while yelling at her kids in the back seat and hit us head on.) It took over two years to get things back to "normal" a...Expand for more
nd resume our mission to get out of Walled Lake. In that time, we also took in two foster kids. It was the right thing to do at the time. In 2001, on Sept. 13, we finally moved to Novi and hugely better schools for our kids. Unfortunately, the foster kids had to be moved to another county because of the way the state does things. We are happy to be in Novi (except when they cut down all the trees!). Our children have said "thanks" repeatedly for the move and have thrived here. Our oldest is in her third year at State, where she is a Color Guard/Winter Guard freak, and our is in his first year at Central where we hope he'll remember to study. (He's my pay-back kid - good, but a little wild.) I am super excited to start over again and find a new life/career, etc. I may be getting old, but still feel like a kid and plan on being active in something worthwhile, that generates income, cuz we're gonna have two in college, and yikes - that freaks me out! If I had time to do the things that really interest me and have fun with, I would: fish, hike, ice skate, roller blade, swim, ride horses, ride a bike, basically never go inside again, volunteer at Waterford Hills again, and train my dog in agility courses. In addition to finding a second career, I plan on bringing some of these things back into my life.
