Beth's Story
As of now, I’m eagerly looking forward to being at our reunion but want to give a heads-up beforehand. It’s not some big secret and there’ll be no way around it once I’m there. It’ll be easier if word gets around without having to explain everything then, since I can’t speak at the moment-- but I also don’t mind talking about it if people ask, since this happens to be my normal life.
I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hurthle Cell cancer in Jan. 2005. It’s a rare form of thyroid cancer with no known treatment, and has metastasized throughout my body despite having tried a number of treatments, clinical trials, gray-label chemotherapy, and naturopathic treatments over the years. I’m still living independently outside of Seattle, being only parent to my two daughters who are now 24 and 18 (my ex-husband moved immediately to Germany to marry again after our divorce in 1999), and until fairly recently, people tell me (generously if not truthfully ;-)) that I don’t look sick. rachea had grown so large that it squeezed my airway down to 5mm, when it should be 12mm. I had to try to shrink it with radiation, but doctors were afraid the burn and swelling from that could shut my airway completely. So I had a tracheostomy Jan. 21 to give another way to breathe if needed.
Then I had radiation to the trachea in February-March. Sure enough, the whole area including vocal chords swelled until they stopped working, even though I never lost the ability to breathe through my nose too. My voice disappeared completely on March 2nd, but since June I’ve been able to whisper a little. Typing on my iPad makes things easier, plus it helps prevent coughing. My glacial recovery could take months more but I’m finally allowed to fly again! Our hope is that once it has finally healed we can let the trach close back up. I cover it with scarves in public because it is a freaky thing, even to me! Besides, it has the added benefit of covering up my neck….
Thanks a lot for taking your time to read this. I'm looking forward to seeing and listening to everyone!
