I began work as a secretary to the Personnel Director at ABC Radio one week after graduation in 1946. Next, I was promoted to secretary to the Producer of Don McNeill's "Breakfast Club"" Radio Program. Then 4 years as secretary to the Producer of "Welcome Travelers" Radio Program and traveled with the program to Europe during the Berlin Air Lift while they entertained at different Air Force camps in Germany, France, London, etc. I married Mr.Tom Gibson in 1950. I had 3 children during the marriage. Divorced in 1963. I worked after the my youngest child graduated High School in Wheaton, Il. as secretary to the President of Arctic Cat Snowmobiles and later back in Chicago as Secretary to the President of National Republic Bank, secretary to the President of Grant Hospital and lastly, secretary to a Vice President of Marketing at the Wrigley Company (Wrigley Gum) for 10 years retiring in 1980. I really enjoyed my secretarial experiences ant appreciated the Typing and Shorthand classes I learned at Glenbard High School. I married and later divorced Mr.Tom Powers in 1980 and moved to Chicago to be nearer to my jobs. Currently living on the north side in the neighborhood called "Andersonville". After a period of adjustment over my suburban "roots" - I am now very happy to be a Chicagoan and...Expand for more
love this city a lot. My children are still nearby but have not produced any grandchildren for me. However, we do have a wonderful menagerie of dogs and/or cats. I am 87 1/2 years old and healthy except for arthritic, painful knees. I walk with a cane mostly but can still drive (extremely well) and am beginning to spend lots of time recollecting "the Good Old Days". I was an Antiques and Collectibles dealer for about 25 years with a garage and house full of unsold items to prove it. Soon going the E-Bay route. I also write poetry from time to time and have had a few published by Eiber and Wein publishers. Here is one of my latest not yet published: UNFORGETTABLE: "Life is too Short" we always say - And know it's true day after day -- We may laugh or dry, pray or shout -- Deep down, we know there's no way out. Meanwhile, we wish and dream and hope - to make our lives not be "remote" -- We court true love, success or Fame - While trying hard to win "Life's Game." One and all, I think it's true - For those you know ... For me and you -- From January to cold Decembers, - We hope someone we loved remembers. Dear friend though your passing feels so Regrettable -- You won Life's Game -- You're Unforgettable!! By Betty Powers 1/25/16 to honor the passing of an old friend.
