Betty's Story

Updating my profile with a little more new news: As of December 15, 2020, I am officially retired. Was trying to hang in at IBM until I turned 70...SS would have been more and I enjoyed my work and the team I worked with. But on March 2 of 2016 IBM laid off 14000 employees, mostly 55 or older (and I definitely fit that demographic). My manager contacted me and two of my coworkers and then he was contacted and also laid off. So our department was hit with a 25% RA (IBM nicely calls layoffs "Resource Actions"). I was a little shocked but now am sooooo very happy. IBM is still continuing with the RAs, even to this time. Bless those people still there. So now I'm getting Social Security, enrolled in full Medicare, joined AARP and have a big smile on my face. Enjoying my new life-journey. Attended Hancock for two years after graduating Righetti. Then attended San Jose State and received degree in Mathematics. Got a teaching credential for secondary math, but while student teaching, realized I didn't like large groups of teenagers. I was working part time at Memorex and they offered me a computer programmer trainee position and I jumped on it. Have been involved with data processing (mostly software support) since 1971. I worked for a computer timesharing then software company from 1975 to 1996 when they closed the SF Bay Area Office. Then fortunately became employed by IBM doing software support for DB2 products. Worked at IBM for 20 years and was "retired" in 2016. Married now for almost 46 years. Two children, daughter Lindsey 38 and son Christopher 35. We have been blessed with 7 grandchildren and are expecting our 8th next April. Lindsey has two sons and two daughters. Christopher has two sons and one daughter and is expecting another daughter in April 2021. My grandsons are the cutest, smartest, most wonderful boys in the world (of course) and I my granddaughters are showing signs of the same wonderful attributes. Don and I live in La Honda which is a town of about 500 in the Santa Cruz mountains on the coast side (San Mateo County). We've lived here since 1980. Guess I wanted my kids to be raised in a town like I was (Sisquo...Expand for more
c). Small elementary school and they both attended high school in Half Moon Bay. Lindsey attended San Jose State U and graduated with honors with a BSN in nursing. She is employed at the Pediatric Emergency Room at Stanford Hospital. She loves it except for the commute from Santa Cruz to Stanford 3 days a week.. Christopher lives in Placerville now but is hoping to buy a home in Sacrament in 2021. Before kids, Don and I skiied mostly in the Lake Tahoe area every weekend during the winter with several ski trips to Colorado and Utah too and camped in the Sierra every weekend during the summer. We then spent a lot of our time attending music concerts as often as possible. We spent a lot of our time following the Grateful Dead around California before Jerry died, but we like almost all kinds of music. We are very fortunate that the La Honda, Pescadero, Half Moon Bay area seems to be a magnet for musicians so we get to enjoy a lot of music right in our own backyard. We have slowed down a lot since Don had a serious car accident in 1996....and, of course, the pandemic would have slowed us down anyway...haha. Both of our kids were very active in sports through high school so that was fun and, of course, we have the SF Giants and Forty Niners, Stanford and Cal to follow closely. And our grandkids are all very athletic. The Santa Cruz kids are surfing all the time and Tanner (our oldest at 15 is a snowboarder and big skateboarder. I think a lot about growing up in the Santa Maria/Sisquoc area and feel that we all were very fortunate to have been in high school and post high school during the time that we were. A very special time. I am on Facebook A LOT!!!! So you can find me there if you like. I kept my maiden name when I got married in 1975 so I'm still Betty Nogues. I have been able to become FB friends with several of my highschool friends and have enjoyed it very much. I got pretty crazy political the last year or so....but have calmed down quite a bit since the Nov 2020 election. Yes, I became one of those Northern California Liberals...but hope you don't hold that against me. Stay safe and take care. Betty updated 12/15/2020
