Betty's Story

Who I am as prompted by the "story wizard." I always wanted to be a some sort of motorcycle tester, race car driver or a state trooper when I grew up. My family and friends thought they were crazy ideas. As it turns out, I guess they were right. I thought about becoming a social worker but when I found out the salary that quickly changed my mind because I knew I wanted to be able to eat. Life events changed me too that there is no way I could deal with all the broken, forgotten, abused and unwanted children. I would want to take them all home. Favorite way to relax: Hang out with my husband -- especially taking a motorcycle ride together. Watch a movie, read, listen to music and pretty much anything with our children. I'm a spontaneous person who doesn't like having to schedule to do something weeks in advance. To me nothing is too short notice unless I have already made plans. The end of August 2011, I went and took the course to get my motorcycle license. I passed and bought a Harley 1200 Nightster. Woo Hoo! Been riding ever since. My inspiration from when I was in high school came about as a result of a social worker who was kind to me and believed in me. Also, a few of the Dover High teachers inspired me especially one who helped me get a job at the end of my junior year which luckily turned into a job to last during my senior year. A story from way back when. I have not ridden a horse since the time (around age 16) Deborah Martin convinced me to go riding with her and some other people on a farm. Don't recall if she knew/knows that while I was trailing everyone, my horse balked, I went forward and slipped off, my foot caught in the stirrup and the horse was content with dragging me through the woods for a while listening to me pleading, begging and cursing it to stop. Second story, around about that same time, age 17, I decided that since I could do all night dance marathons (and loved every minute of them), a skate-a-thon should be a piece of cake. I didn't skate well and didn't own my own skates. After about ten hours I called it quits but after sitting down for awhile, my swollen knees locked up and I couldn't get up or walk. Had to call my boyfriend to come rescue me. Got carried out of the roller rink in front of everyone. Not one of my finer moments... I've lived in Connecticut, Ohio, Virginia briefly and New Jersey. Been back in Delaware since 1988. The one person from my past (relating to high school) who I'd most like to see again is Steven Peer, because he was a good friend and a really, really nice person but, unfortunately, he died not long after graduation. I don't have any obsessions (or at least I don't think I do...lol). I like to watch Dancing with the Stars when it's on, shows like "The Middle; Modern Family and Dead Like Me" and I love to listen to music. I like to watch Mecum Auctions and see all the amazing muscle cars that I'll never afford to own. My biggest surprise in life has been how hard it is to find someone who appreciates my sense of humor or has a sense of humor, isn't difficult because they're so rigid and can be spontaneous about doing things. If you call me and ask me to do something a half an hour from now - I'll do it if I am not already doing something I have to do at that moment. I recently ma...Expand for more
rried and Jerry is my soul mate and the male version of me in that we have so much fun together, we share our love of motorcycles, old cars and hotrods, living in the country and the list goes on and on. He's the kindest person with a heart of gold AND a sense of humor! My dream home would be one that's paid for and maintenance free...lol.. Seriously, it would be in the country where I could have a bonfire, ride a motorcycle, go cart or 4 wheeler anytime I wanted. From my kids, I've learned that children grow up faster than you think. I cherish them and I am always there for them. Kids model their parents so I try to be a fun and happy parent. If I could see another teacher again, some of you may think I'm weird for this, but I would like to see Mrs. Bodola and the driver's ed teacher. Go figure, right??? I enjoyed having them as teachers and despite their shield of grumpiness, they were good to me. If I won $100 million, I would create a huge estate built for children without homes and with activities that they would not normally get to experience that many other children take for granted. The estate would have the best schools and teachers, then spend the rest on my family, friends and living life to the fullest. I would create a huge area that I could ride motorcycles anytime I wanted without having to worry about being run over by idiots on the road. And, I would buy my children motorcycles so we could all ride together. I have no more career aspirations. I am what I am. I work in a law firm dealing with clients' intellectual property. My dream jobs were to be a professional race car driver or a person who could ride motorcycles as part of my job. I've decided the latter two will occur when hell freezes over. My first crush, hmmm. If I had to pick someone, I would have to say he is now dead. In fact I could pick 3 people from back when and all three died very young. [Hey, don't get any ideas...I am not the cause of any of the deaths, I am simply a common denominator in that all three knew me]. Too sad...moving on.... My best friends would tell you I'm fun and the nicest person ever who's always there to help or to listen to their problems (they call me their "voice of reason"), but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as helpful but quiet because I work hard while I'm at work - no time to mingle and play. People who knew me might be surprised to know that I was a foster parent for years but finally gave it a rest because it's so hard on my young daughter to say goodbye to children, even ones that just pass through your home for only a couple of days in an emergency situation. I try to remain detached as much as I can but it's hard on me too. I have a son in college (now decided to join the Marines) and another one trying to find his way in life (moved back home a couple of times - finally landed a job he's proud of - woo hoo again!) and a thirteen year daughter. As for what I would do over if given a chance - not going to go there. Too sad to mention. Channeling happy thoughts...because nothing can be changed so it is what it is. Hope to see some folks sometime in the near future. Take care and may you be healthy and happy! My best to you, Betty (Northern Delaware friends) Betty Ann (slower Delaware friends)
