Betty's Story

Life After my heart attack in Mexico on Mother's Day, 10 hours motoring back to La Paz, getting a kayak ride to the beach where the ambulance waited, having an angioplasty and 4 stents, Jim and I have a whole new perspective on life. We're stopping to smell the roses. We've visited Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa (where Robin is living now) and Seattle (where we cruised the San Juans on a friend's trawler.) I've finally lost the extra pounds I've been packing around, and fit into clothes I haven't worn in years. Every day is a gift. My husband, Jim, and I have lived in Discovery Bay 9 years. We love being on the water. My parents moved us to Concord from Clearlake when I was a freshman, and at Clearlake I had full access to a ski boat, and swam just about every day during the warm weather. Anyway, we now have our 25' patioboat, 6 kayaks, 1 paddle boat, and a 13' sailboat tied to our dock. Waking up to the sunrise on our cove is just about the coolest thing. Jim and I completed our 4th Baja Ha Ha November '14 on our Catalina 42, Flibbertigibbet, then sailed from Cabo to Mazatlan, then down the Pacific Coast to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Tenecatita, Barra de Navidad, Isla Islabel, Ixtapa and Zihuatenejo. In Zihua, we joined the Zihua Sailfest, that benefits Por Los Ninos, a nonprofit that builds schools for the poorest of the poor. While there, we helped dig up and release baby Olive Ridley turtles. We first did the Baja Ha Ha November '08, and again in 2010 in our O'day 34', "Flibbertigibbet". In November '11, we did the Baja Bash, sailing the boat "uphill" from Cabo to our dock in Discovery Bay. What a trip! We both enjoyed the Ha-ha very much. As Mark Twain said, "sailing is the most expensive way to travel third class." In June 2012 we bought a Catalina 42 in San Carlos, that Fall we sailed her to La Paz, and spent as much of the winter season as we could, leaving it "on the hard" in La Paz for the Summer. We joined the Baja Ha Ha again in 2013, crewing on another boat. When we got to Cabo, we rented a car, drove to La Paz, splashed the boat (also named Flibbertigibbet) and managed, during the season, to spend a month in Mexico, a month at home, etc., driving back and forth on the Baja Peninsula. Life is pretty cool. We decided that this year, instead of leavin...Expand for more
g the boat in La Paz, to sail her home. While we had Flibbertigibbet home, we took care of some major projects: fixed the anchor locker so the chain doesn't pile up, replaced all faucets with Stainless Steel faucets, built a new mattress for the Captain's quarters (I spent 4-1/2 years doing boat covers and upholstery during the late 90s). My husband, Jim is finally retiring (a little at a time) as a polygraph examiner; I'm his secretary/office manager, after retiring from sailmaking/canvas work. We've been married since 1967. We are enjoying the heck out of sailing in Mexico! Our oldest daughter, Robin, moved to Iowa with her husband, Joel, who works now for Rockwell, where they make components for airplane cockpits, She's still a flight attendant with American Airlines and is now based at Chicago. Charlie, our oldest son, lives in Dunsmuir with his daughter, Selena, 16. Cindy has moved to Antelope in the California foothills with her boyfriend, and our grandson, Stefan (21) is living in Concord with his fiancee; Buck, (our baby) and his wife Gretchen live in Clyde in an old Bernard Maybeck home that they're restoring. They have a 14-year-old daughter, Grace, and a 9-year-old boy, Canon, whose birthday is in September, two days before mine. Buck is a computer tech and Gretchen is a professional photographer. Our three older kids are all in their 50s! How can that be? With our cruising schedule, I'm not tutoring English as a Second Language. I'm still trying to learn Spanish. We just celebrated 47 years of marriage. Not bad for knowing each other 2.5 months when we got married. College I started DVC after high school, then went into a bad marriage, got out of it, went to work, got into a good marriage, eventually returned and brought my 2.0 GPA to 3.8, and earned my A.A.. After I finally graduated, I went to Spokane to Polygraph school, where I earned Polygraph Certification, and hated it. Finally got a job doing what I loved. Sewing. On Boats. I've finally decided what I want to be when I grow up...Retired! Okay, so now I'm retired, I've gotten Jim to stop working, mostly. so we can spend our time playing. With our Winter sailing schedule, I may succeed! I still sew, have a heavy duty machine on the boat, and sew anything that needs sewing, which is handy with the boat.
