Betty's Story

Life Below is my origninal profile which I have decided to leave as part of my history but realize an update is in order so hear goes: On March 11, 2014 I remarried a gentleman named Larry whose home was in Alaska so I moved from Raton, NM to Wasilla, AK March 28, 2014. We finally found a home that suited us in Big Lake, AK, closed on August 14 and moved here August 28, 2014. Up until that time we had been residing with his youngest son in Wasilla. His oldest son lives near Palmer. He also has a daughter in Pennsylvania. Larry is involved with the Iditarod and has such a deep love for Alaska that I did not wish to ask him to leave. My ties to Raton were not deep so was easier for me to leave my life there. Often we have a moose or two strolling through our yard. Early Memorial Day 2015 twins were born behind our shop. And in May of 2015 my daughter and her husband along with their daughter left Raton moving to Yelm, WA. Came as a surprise when he left the New Mexico State Police and she left her job but it was time for them to move on with their life so definitely any final ties with Raton were cut. All things work together often in ways we least expect. Recently Larry was appointed to the Board of Adjustments for the Bourough of Mat-Su. (In the lower 48 we would call it a county.) Big Lake is trying to incorporate and if that vote passes he also will be serving on the City Council so, along with our church activities, he will be very busy. Alaska is different than what I thought it would be but it is very beautiful never-the-less. However, I am just a small town girl and not used to so much traffic. Wasilla has just about everything a large town has to offer. I was AMAZED to say the least at all the big names it has like Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Target along with two major grocery stores and resturants everywhere. When he goes to the VA in Anchorage, 50 miles south, there is EVERYTHING you can want. I haven't done near as much driving up here in the "Last Frontier" as he does most but have ventured out in his BIG, LONG 4X4 Chevrolet Pickup and do just fine as long as I have 40 Acres to turn the thing around.....LOL! My dog Rico I had given to my ex-husband Tommy as in reality Rico had been more attached to him even though Rico had been given to me as a gift. It was a hard decision but I felt Tommy deserved Rico. Unfortunately, not long ago Rico ran out in front of a car and died as a result. A sad day for all. Larry has a Siberian Husky which shares our home and, in fact, tries to rule like a queen without success. Just as Raton, I lov...Expand for more
e it here also. Needless to say the photo ops are endless. I have so many pictures I need to edit and share. Maybe I will get to it during the long, dark winter which is lurking just around the corner. Last winter was milder than usual and this winter is supposed to be the same but I was out in -25 degree weather taking photos of dog mushing races and with the right clothing one stays toasty warm so I had to problems. Larry plans to be more involved this year. ******************************************************************************************************************************** I currently live in Raton, New Mexico with my Silky Terrier, Rico. I absolutely LOVE it here. Raton is just 13 miles from the Colorado State Line and sits at the foot of Raton Pass on I-25. It has a small town atmosphere with enough shopping and resturants and Pueblo, CO is close enough for whatever Raton does not have to offer. My oldest daughter and her family currently reside in Raton also. She and her husband Carl, who is a New Mexico State Policeman, have two children, Caleb and Rachel. Carl is in the National Guard and returned from a year plus deployment to Iraq Sept. 11, 2006. We all are very proud of him. My daughter Marcia is the Family Readiness Co-ordinator for the local National Guard Unit and I help when possible as a volunteer. This is a support group for the local Guard as well as any other military personnel that have been deployed from our area. I have been disabled for years and am limited to what I can do but but attend church and volunteer as much as possible and also keep active with my home as well as being an avid gardener. My youngest daughter Michelle lives in Ohio. She has three daughters. I do not see her much due to my inability to travel like I did before the incidents that damaged my spine, but via the telephone and email we keep in constant contact. I also greatly enjoy photography, which is evident by the pictures I posted, and so I can often be found taking photos around the area. Thank goodness for digital cameras!! Raton is a very scenic area and one of my past times is going "Animal Hunting" with my camera, kids and friends. We often spot turkeys, deer, elk, bear and have seen an occasional bobcat, lynx and coyote. I entered two Chamber of Commerce contests and placed both times and have sold some of my work in the past. My divorce has changed my perspective on life but I have decided to rediscover myself and with God's help I will succeed although the process seems to be slow and oh so very painful.
