Betty's Story

Life Where to begin --- I guess college. By the time I graduated from IUP in 1961, I was married and the mother of a 6 mo. old baby, Ricky. I know, not too bright but I didn't know that at the time!! We moved to Plum Boro, and I got a job teaching in a school just three blocks from our house. In 1964, I had my second son, Ronny. I loved teaching and continued to teach in Plum for 35 years. I was divorced in 1966 and five years later married Joe and moved to Shaler Twp, in Glenshaw, Pa. We did lots of fun things and the kids did well in school. We had a boat and we all became fairly good at water-skiing. We also had a motor home for awhile and traveled to Canada and other lake areas. You might be surprised to know that I got a pilot's license!! It wasn't easy but the challenge was well worth it. We eventually got our own plane and traveled with the kids to vacation spots around the US. I don't want to brag about my kids so I'll make this really fast. Ricky became quite a swimmer and won the state championship for the 50 free stye when he was a junior in high school. He won a full scholorship to Pitt (yesssss!) where he graduated from in 1982. Ronny also was a swimmer and spent several summers life-guarding and coaching the summer swim team. He graduated from Grove City in 1986. They ar...Expand for more
e doing very well. Rick lives in Milwaukee and I'm lucky that he and his family get home quite often and my grandaughter and I fly up there when she isn't too busy with basketball, school and friends. Ron lives in Cranberry and I go down four days a week and babysit for just a couple of hours. It's fun to be such a part of the lives and still have lots of time to play. In 1983, my husband died suddenly of a heart attack. It was a tough time, but you can't get through life without some bad times. I still live in our house that we bought 35 years ago and hope to stay here until they take me out in a pine box. I'm busy doing lots of busy stuff. Beside babysitting, I volunteer in a gift shop at Healthsouth Rehabilation Center. I bowl once a week with some of my old teaching buddies. A friend and I walk 2-3 times a week and when I am still, I love to read, especially mysteries and psychological thrillers. Playing in the dirt is also lots of fun in the spring and summer. I have created a pretty neat little flower bed in my back yard. I have such wonderful memories of Beaver High School. Beaver was such a great place to grow up (you couldn't tell us that then) Where else could you walk to canteen, and the movies and have cool places like Machen's and PeeknTom's to hang out??? Thanks for the memories!!!
