Beverly's Story

MY STORY After FP, I went to Morgan and worked my way through as a commuting student. People often ask me if I remember certain people, places or events. I laughingly tell them the only think I remember is the number #3, #13, and Walbrook Junction's old #35 (aka stage coach through Windsor Hills and Forest Park) taking me to school, work, work and school for the 5 years it took me to finish my studies. I married at 20 and become a divorce at 27. Afterwards, I'm happy to say, I found out everything I needed to know about the sexual revolution, Mary Jane, good music and liberation. People were genuine; and America hadn't sunken into the pits of materialism. Natural was beautiful and all you needed was a hard crease in your jeans and a polyester shirt. I was a free-spirited wild child. I rode the queen's seat on Harley Davidson's best, met some of the most interesting, adventurous people and carved out a new life for myself and my kid. My sympathy to anyone who missed that era. By the 80s I was a homeowner and totally into the education of my only child. My graduate studies in counseling adults prepared me well for my work with women marginalized by life's circumstances. I left Baltimore City Public School in 1983, having worked with pregnant teenagers, and became a correctional education teacher at the Md. Correctional Institution for Women in...Expand for more
Jessup, MD. I retired after 31 years of public service. My career was extremely rewarding and it eventually became my missionary field of work. Working in prison wasn't glamorous and it definitely took a specific personality to survive the demands of a structured environment. I never had a day when I didn't want to work with this population. Underfunded, unrecognized and unappreciated I wouldn't change anything. One day very soon I'll start my memoirs with a lot of it dedicated to forgotten women striving to live through crises. Work in prison did not give me many opportunities to network in the greater Bmore community. I went to work early and came home late. When I retired, I realized the world and especially Baltimore had changed a lot in 21 years. The people who knew me best were left behind in prison. Today, I especially enjoy not having time restraints. I live at a leisurely pace and keep life simple. I've seen so much pain and suffering that simple things mean a lot to me. Update as of July, 2011: Ive been living in North Carolina for almost a year. All I can say is, I LOVE IT and surprisingly don't miss Baltimore City. My occasional trips home and lots of phone chats allow me to stay in touch with my church family and friends. My kid, grandson, dog, the beach, good food, new southern living, and my faith in God. Life's been good.
