About Bev
After graduating from Van Nuys High, I attended L.A. Valley College for 2 years to obtain an A.A. degree, while working part-time as a long distance operator for Pacific Bell. At the end of the 2 years at Valley College I married, increased my work for Pacific Bell to full time, and began taking courses (part-time) toward a teaching credential at Cal State Northridge and U.C.L.A. extension. Because I only attended school after work, it took about 11 years to complete my BachelorÂs Degree in English at CSUN. During this period of time I received several job improvements at Pac Bell, divorced, and decided to continue as a manager for Pac Bell rather than pursue teaching.
My current husband and I married in 1989. I took an early retirement from Pac Bell in 1992, at which time they granted me a fellowship to complete my teaching credential. We located and purchased property in the Sierra Nevada foothills, in Nevada City above Auburn. During the first year I made the 1 ½ hour commute to SacramentoÂs National University 3 nights a week to obtain my high school teaching credential in English and computers, and did my student teaching assignment at the local high school, Nevada Union High School, in both English and computer.
Since retirement from Pac Bell I have not wanted to work Âfull time because my husband is totally retired and we enjoy a lot of travel, so I have used my credential to work as a K-12 substitute, an Adult Ed. computer teacher, and a local community college computer teacher (Sierra College). I also volunteer as a literacy tutor for local ESL adults learning English, an activity I truly love. Some of my students have gone on to become U.S. citizens, and I have enjoyed watching their children grow up. I currently tutor 1 Japanese man and 1 Hispanic woman. I serve as a Board offic...Expand for more
er of the literacy non-profit, and have become involved in fund-raising and grants.
Although I would have liked to have had children, it was not Âin the cards for me. However, my husband has 4 grown children and 5 grandchildren, 2 in college who I was fortunate enough to meet when they were about 3 and 5 years old and consider my own grandchildren, and 3 more in elementary school or younger. So, I still get the benefits of children, if somewhat vicariously. We live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas with our dog, Indy, and cat, Misty. We get enough snow in winter to be fun but not too much work.
We have been fortunate to have traveled extensively through Europe and Asia, and some parts of the Middle East and North Africa. My husband and his former wife used to own a travel agency. He became experienced in travel without tours, so we generally travel on our own, using tour guides only when necessary, such as in China or Iran. He lived in Iran 2 years under the ShahÂs regime putting in a phone system, and still has close Iranian friends from that time. Three years ago we toured Iran, being hosted in Teheran, Caspian, and Isfahan by his former landlord, and the rest of the time on a ÂprivateÂ(8 family members and friends) minibus tour of the major locations in the country. It was a wonderful trip, and all the Iranians we met along the way were gracious and welcoming. We have also been many times to South East Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, India, Nepal, Indonesia, and Sipadon Island for scuba divers, as well as all European countries. Our most recent trip was through Turkey and Slovenia.
I am eagerly looking forward to renewing acquaintences with high school friends. This will be the first reuinion IÂve attended, thanks to Classmates making it easy to learn about it and making it easy to locate the friends.
