Beverly's Story
Having attended the 20th ad 30th reunions but skipped the 40th, I look forward to our 50th. Unlike some people who say "it seems like yesterday", to me high school seems long ago and far away. After graduating from ACHS, I got a BA in Sociology from Northwester University in Evanston, Illinois. I then moved to Minneapolis with my now husband of 45 years while he did his medical residency at the University of Minnesota. Although we loved Minneapolis, Steve always wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest, so with our newborn daughter, Jenna, we moved to Portland in 1973, where we have lived for 42 years. After the arrival of our son, Josh, I returned to graduate school at Portland State University to earn an MA in Urban Planning. I have been a consulting land use/health care planner for nearly 35 years, an interesting and fulfilling career. During this time, Portland -- always lovely and progressive -- has become a very sophisticated city. Yes, it is a bit "woo-woo"/wacky, although somewhat exaggerated in "Portlandia". It is no surprise that Portland is also the setting for the filming of "Grimm".

at the urging of our kids whose families are permanently settled in Boston. I have been reluctant to move because I am not quite ready to retire and am ambivalent about leaving our West Coast family and friends behind. So, we struck a bargain. We sold our beach house on the Oregon coast -- tsunami fodder if you have read the recent article about the "big one" in the New Yorker -- and bought a house on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Boston, where we are living for six months this year to make sure this is the right move. We live in the country -- a real change for an urban planner -- two miles inland from the Atlantic and about 10 minutes from downtown Gloucester, a charming colonial-era fishing community. The experiment has proven to be a good one -- we have spent a lot of special time with our kids, their spouses and our three grandsons, 8, 9, and 11, and some lifelong friends live nearby. We have wonderful new neighbors, new friends of friends and extended family. With its extensive system of back roads and gently rolling terrain, Cape Ann is especially good for cycling, our favorite recreational sport.
So, we plan to our Portland condo next spring and move to Gloucester full-time. See you all at the end of August.
