Spencer James's Story

I was known as Jim or James but my first name was Spencer, a family name. I loved being at Canoga Park HI but did not appreciate the time as much as I do now. I missed making more friends and only found that out after graduation. I went on to Pierce, joined a frat and was an agricultural student. That love of agriculture is with me still today. I stayed a Pierce for a AA in Horticulture, to long, but worked 40-48 hr weeks at Rocketdyne to get money for school and help my parents. Off to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for a BS degree in Agronomy. My first job, I was employed in Gilroy, CA for Schilling Spice in crop research for onion and garlic dehydrated production in CA, Or, and NV. for one year. After one year delay, I entered the service to fulfill my obligations to the US Army. I am real proud of my service experience. I was drafted at Cal Poly, SLO, sent to Army basic boot camp at Ft Knox, KY and elected to join ROTC in order to finish my degree in SLO. I received my BS Degree, US Army Officer Commission and after one year delay, was trained at the US Army, Armor Officer Branch School, Ft Knox, KY, served in the 2nd Armor Div, Ft Hood, TX in a ready unit for rapid deployment to Germany. I received orders for Vietnam by way of training in Panama, Jungle Survival school, Ft. Amador, John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School, Ft Bragg, and assigned to MACV (Military Assistance Command ,Vietnam) as an advisor in a 5 man team operating with Popular...Expand for more
Force platoons and a Regional Force company. We lived in a district compound in a VC/NVA contested area and had US assets on call for ground and air support. Our mission was to train and operate day and night with our units for operations and ambushes. Living with the people gave me a different prospective on the conflict. THOSE TWO ACTIVE DUTY YEARS IN THE US ARMY WERE THE MOST INTERESTING AND EXCITING TIMES OF MY LIFE. Returning to CA in the USA Army Reserves, I got married, have two wonderful daughters, joined the Long Beach Fire Department and spent 29 years on the job. I enjoyed being a fireman in many capacities on engines, trucks and fireboats. I was an Engineer at the Long Beach Airport station and the down town high rise station for most of my career. I ended my career on the Technical Rescue Unit Engine which trained the department on special details, responded to all major incidents and specialized in high angle rescues, confined space rescues and major incidents in the Long Beach Harbor and freeways. During this time, I also owned a landscape contracting corporation in South Orange County for 32 years specializing in commercial/industrial landscape maintenance that received national, state and local awards for excellence. Now, my wife Nancy and I live in San Juan Capistrano,South Orange County and also in Molokai, Hawaii. I still am involved in agricultural interests but really enjoy traveling throughout the world with my wife..
