Bill's Story
Life
hey folks, I am presently living in Snyder Texas where I am working as an electronics technician for a company that is a contractor with the Air Force. In specific I maintain and repair radars.
My beautiful bride is Roxie, who has put up with being married to me since October of 1990. Between the two of us we have 5 kids and 10 grandkids.
We are pretty much enjoying life, especially since I retired from the Navy in 2000.
Roxie is an artist mostly painting in oils but does some works in acrylics and some others in water colors. I'll have to get a website up so that folks can see some of her work. Of course I am prejudiced but I think she does pretty damned well.
As I said we have five kids, the older two are in the San Diego, California area another in suburbia Atlanta another in Dayton, Ohio and the last is in Bowling Green Ky.
Will add more later, i just figured I should put something in here
Military
I spent 24 years serving in Uncle Sam's canoe club. For the most part it was a good 24 years, I certainly did get to see a lot of the world having sailed all the oceans and most of the major seas. The only continent I did not get to was Antarctica, that's okay.
I joined in November 1975, went to boot camp and school in Great Lakes, Illinois with follow on schooling in at Mare Island, Vallejo, California.
My first boat was the Julius A Furer FFG-6 out of Charleston, South Carolina. I was on the Jolly JAF from July 1977 to December 1981.
After the JAF I went ...Expand for more
to recruiting duty where I recruited out of Barre, Vermont from March 1982 to March 1985. I don't believe you could pay me enough to do that kind of tour again.
From recruiting I went back to school, this time to Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Virginia. In December 1985 I reported to the Dwight D Eisenhower CVN-69 in Norfolk, Virginia. It was on board the Ike that I made Chief Petty Officer.
In February 1988 I transferred over to the John King DDG-3 which was also in Norfolk. That was a good tour because I was the only Chief in a 35 man division, hey who doesn't like being the boss?
We decommissioned the John King in March of 1990.
After that I went to Instructor duty at Dam Neck for three years.
Worked with a bunch of good people there, had good instructors working for me, a good division officer, probably my best duty station.
Roxie and I wanted a change so I got orders to Mobile Training Unit Sasebo, Japan. That was definitley a different tour. It was good because I kept my hands in the equipment and I sure enjoyed doing that much more than having to play politics on board ship. But I still had one more boat.
That boat was the Mount Vernon LSD-39 out of San Diego, California. I was on her untill January of 1997 when I went to instructor duty again, this time at Fleet Training Center San Diego, California. I retired from there at the end of January, 2000.
It was worth it and I would do it again, not necessarily the same way, but I would do it again.
