William's Story
Life
I grew up in East LA and moved to South Central to live with my Dad at 13. Went to Bret Harte on 92nd and Hoover and graduated in 1966. Went on to Fremont and wasted no time getting in gang related activity and was asked to leave LA City schools in October 66. Wound up at Inglewood Hi and for the next 18 months, had the best time of my life going to school. NO gangs, no fights, no teachers hating. Meet some great friends and saw the most beautiful high school girls in the world.. Unfortunately, my brother moved out of Ingelwood in 67 and the school found out. Inglewood Hi asked me to leave. Jumped opver to Lennox HI and again meet some cool people. A little more rowdy and crazy but still good people. I was working to pay my rent up on 116th st. so much that I fell behind in school. Lived with a friend from Morningside Hi, Steve Brockmole in that little apartment and had a good time until I was again, asked to leave Lennox HI for not showing up for class, not getting my homework in and just not getting it done. IN looking back, I don't feel like I got treated bad by the schools, they were just trying to protect the other students. I had nobody to support me so I could stay in school, so I just stoped going (trying). Well I drifted from place to place, job to job for the next couple of years and then the big hand of Uncle Sam came calling on me. Didn'...Expand for more
t know at the time but getting drafted actually saved my Life. Got drafted in 69 and went to Nam in 70, got home on April Fools Day 1971. I came
home and landed face down in Manhattan Beach for three years trying
to get clean and sober enough to do something with my life. In November of 73, I got a call from a friend I went to Nam with and he
encouraged me to move to Napa and go to Jr College. Started
Napa Community College in April 74, got my AA and took my duffle bag, jumped on a Greyhound Bus and went to Sacracmento.
Attended Sacto State and got my B.A. in Crininal Justice in May 1977. Worked
several low paying povery programs and finally got hired by the
Department of Youth Authority. Went in at the lowest rank and over
my 27 years I moved up to Parole Agent Supervsisor here in the
Sacto area. Met a beautiful local, got married and had four kids.
We have two grandchildren. I will retire next year December from
my department. If anyone remembers my brothers, they were David, Larry, Danny, all now deceased, and I have one left, Ray, he lives in
Vallejo and has been backthere for over 30 years. Hope to hear from
any of you ole Eastmont Grammer School on Olympic and Indiana-East LA, 97th Street School in South Central Federal Terrance and Solano in Vallejo, Brett Harte, Fremont, Inglewood, Lennox, Napa Community College, Sacramento State alumni.
peace!
