Bill's Story

Life I graduated North Central in 1965, graduated Denison University in Granville, Ohio in 1969. Went to NYC and joined a rock group, Valhalla, after college. That didn't pan out so went to the Boston area fall of 1970 with Liz Gorrill from Denison. She went to Berklee School of Music and I took private drum lessons there with Gene Roma and worked fulltime at various jobs. Liz and I formed a working cover group in 1971 which worked continuously (and for which I quit day job) until we moved to Queens about 1973 because we were traveling down from Boston for lessons with Lennie Tristano (in Queens) once a week for 18 months. Once in NY area, Liz and I broke up, I moved into the West Village and got a fulltime day job, Portfolio Mgr for Reserve Fund. I also continued lessons with Lennie and started extensive jam sessions with various jazz students of Lennie and Sal Mosca. In 1978 I moved up to Eastchester (in Westchester County) with a girlfriend, and she threw me out in about a year due to my constant jam sessions and occasional gigs. Lived alone and brooded and lost my day job...Expand for more
. While at a Sunday Jazz Brunch at Peachtrees in New Rochelle, I got a job bartending there through a friend/waitress who told her sister about me. The sister, Fran, became my wife in 1981. I found my second "day" career, accounting, and got a job in Rye, NY in 1985 bookkeeping. Moved up to Controller and left there in 1998 to be Controller at Yamazaki Tableware, Inc., where I am now. I also am still married to Fran and I still have jazz sessions regularly, though only about once a week rather than 5 times a week. We get occasional gigs, one at Birdland last October. I play the drums just about every day, and am still getting better and having more and more fun at it. The best thing that's happened musically is sessioning with Sal Mosca on a fairly regular basis, with my favorite bassist, Don Messina, and Jimmy Halperin on Tenor Sax. Sal, Don and I have a CD out called Thing Ah Majig on Zinnia Records, and I have 5 other CDs out, all with Don, 3 with Larry Bluth on piano, one with Jon Easton on piano (Cadence Records) and one with Jimmy Halperin on Tenor Sax (Cadence Records).
