Bill's Story
After high school I went to Indiana University on the seven year plan. I had more credits in sociology than anything else so I received a B.A. in Sociology (I was only three credits shy of a math degree, too).
It took me a year to find a full time job. In the interim, I worked at the Center for Survey Research at IU and at the Monroe County Youth Shelter. My first salaried job was doing Occupational Safety and Health Statistics for the State of Indiana in Indianapolis. I worked for the State for three years, also doing occupational employment and local area unemployment statistics.
I took a job with American States Insurance as a computer programmer trainee, thinking it would be a good skill to develop and move on. I've been in Information Technology ever since, though. After three years with ASI I got a job with Otis Elevator in Bloomington. After four years there, I took a staff pos...Expand for more
ition at Indiana University. Five years later I went back to Otis and have been there since.
Married in 1985. First (and only) child born in 1990. Divorced in 1993.
In 1999 I was volunteering at the Tibetan Cultural Center, selling tickets at the front of the property while the Dalai Lama was giving the Kalachakra initiation in a huge tent towards the back of the property. Somebody came looking for 'big guys' to sit at the front of the stage and keep people at a safe distance. And so I got to be there for the whole ten day experience.
I can't really describe it, but my life hasn't been the same since. The Kalachakra itself didn't do much for me, but the preliminary teaching (Shantideva's 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life') blew me away.
After my mis-spent youth, life had settled down into a routine of takin' care of business, and little else. Suddenly life had purpose.
