Bill's Story

Life in Review: With the 50-Year SCHS Anniversery milepost approaching at warp speed, it's as good a time as any to reflect and recall significant personal benchmarks that standout since those distant dusty days of 1955-58. So, add one more profile to the mix... Education after SCHS: Menlo College two years Colgate University one year UC Berkeley two years B.A. History (U.S. Coast Guard reserve duty sandwiched before graduation) Activities: Editor school paper, yearbook, rowing, tennis---heavy emphasis on having fun. Career: Started out as "corporate suit" in San Francisco. Fled that for 4 years in rock concert promotion and music business---with modest success. Joined KYA radio in S.F. which led to 35 years in the broadcast business. Ultimately owned and managed radio stations in Portland, Oregon. Concurrently, began a classical music syndication service for radio stations in ten top-30 markets. After selling Portland media properties, became President and shareholder of media company in Kansas City (radio stations and magazines). In 1997 with relaxation of FCC oversight, sold all the properties to billion-dollar company. Post career (or Giving Back): Engaged in a number of non-profit boards and enterprises---provided financial help and guidence to Portland Baroque Orchestra, involved in a number of architectural preservation projects, Trustee of Multnomah County Library system, then its foundation, Portland Streetcar Board, State Library Advisory Board, Oregon Historical Society, and others. In 2002 was named Honorary Consul to Luxembourg and became officer in Oregon Consular Corps. I am currently involved in helping the Korean-American community develop a foundation to benefit roughly 30,000 K/A's in this region. I have participated as a member of the Oregon Governor's Asian trade mission---most recently visited Seoul. Family: Have been married twice...second marriage is in its 24th year. Three sons have been produced...middle son Josiah is a recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz. My oldest son Ned and his wife Heidi have two sons, making me a grandfather twice. Youngest son Billy is ready to be a freshman at the Universi...Expand for more
ty of Oregon. I have been a resident of Portland since 1969...except for the Kansas City interlude. A dozen years ago, my wife and I purchased properties in France...we currently own three homes in Southern France (Provence)...and can report happily that the wine is getting better, but not cheaper. One of our houses has beginnings from the days of Pax Romana. My wife Michele is active in Portland and Hawaii real estate---is also stays busy managing our French and local real estate properties. While the Santa Cruz days have receded into the past, remanents persist: I see Jan Hammond Quivey occasionally (She has done very well---manages the significant Asian Art Collection at the Portland Art Museum) and Suzi Petti Jones (Class of '57) who is as friendly as ever enjoying a happy life here. Perhaps the only dark cloud on the horizon has been my concern for today's political picture, including the current administration's dismal domestic and foreign policies (what's left?) record. I feel that the media business to which I have dedicated a large portion of my life, has abdicated its responsibility to inform the public accurately, in favor of providing value to its shareholders ahead of all else. As a result, the press has been even less than tepid in its reporting on a range of issues of critical importance...including Iraq, crooked politicians, and the environment. Without getting into a rant, I worry about the world that we leave for our children and grandchildren. Summary: Life has generally been fair, enriched by family and friends. Future chapters are to be active in the community and retain my good health. 2015 Update: Still working: President of Oregon Historical Society, Capital Campaign Chair Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, Chair: Columbia River Scenic Highway Centennial-2016, Wife Michele still dividing time between French and local real estate, Son Ned Co-Founder of Music Festival called Pickathon, son Josiah geologist dividing time between Dallas, TX and Oman, son Billy banjo player seeking his fortune in Nashville. Health excellent. Still see Jan Hammond Quivey and Suzi Petti Jones upon occasion---both doing well.
