Bill's Story

I was born in Atlanta, GA, February 19, 1935. I lived and went to public school in Cincinnati, OH, Dearborn, MI, and Seattle, WA. When I graduated from Lincoln High in 1953, I moved, with my family to Atlanta, GA. I lived there for five years. I attended Georgia State University, where I majored in art, and High Museum School of Art. I worked my way through school with miscellaneous jobs including selling encyclopedias door-to-door and teaching dancing at Arthur Murray in Atlanta and Los Angeles. In 1958 I moved to Los Angeles, CA where I attended Art Center School, Chouinard Art Institute, and Los Angeles City College. In 1963 I moved to Dallas, TX where I fulfilled my lifelong ambition by becoming a commercial artist. Over the next 25 years I was a production artist, free-lance artist, and art director. Later I worked for the Advertising Services department of the Dallas Morning News. I retired from the News on December 31, 1998. In November 1964 I married Jeanne, born and raised in Dallas, TX. We built a house in Irving, TX, a suburb of Dallas. We had four children and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. My wife was to retire in July 2003 and we purchased a 25 foot Class C motor home with which to tour the country when she did. However she was diagnosed with cancer in December 2002 and passed away March 11, 2004. In July and August of 2004 I took the 9,000 mile, trip around the country in our motor home, that we had been planning for nearly two years. In January and February of 2005 I took a 4,000 mile trip to Florida to escape the Texas winter, which we had planned to do every year. However, traveling without her lost most of its appeal. I skipped the two months in Colorado or farther north that we had planned to escape the Texas summer every year and I sold the motor home. In March of...Expand for more
2005, one year after Jeanne's passing, after a 45-year hiatus, I resumed ballroom dancing. In June, 2006 I married Debbie. We built a home at Heritage Ranch Golf & Country Club, an Active Adult Community. I teach ballroom dancing to my fellow homeowners two night a week. I collect $2 per student, per class. Then I donate that money to the Heritage Ranch Ballroom Dance Club, which Debbie and I organized. We use that money to hire a band and a dance host for the single ladies and have a dance every three months or so. I also teach classes each week in two senior citizen centers nearby. I am working on a program to teach ballroom dancing to sixth or seventh grade students as a wonderful teacher did for a group of us when I was in the sixth or seventh grade in Dearborn, MI. Debbie and I built a little ballroom in our home where I teach private lessons several hours each week. School My biggest crush was JoAnn, who I met at Oxford School in Dearborn, MI. I moved to Seattle with my family in 1948. JoAnn and I lost track of one another until we reconnected, through classmates 45 years later. I visited her in a trip through California in 2004, just months before she passed away. My favorite teacher was Mr. Wade, also from Oxford School. He taught science and arithmetic. He took a special interest in his students. He organized a dance class for us after school and organized dances for us. He also taught a sex education class, a rarity, I think, in those days. Sex, dancing and art were my three favorite interests and he covered two out of three. Not bad. Workplace I earned money to attend art school and college in a number of part time and full time jobs. My first real art job was as a package designer and production art in Dallas, TX. I worked there for 18 years and made friendships that I continue to this day.
