Bill's Story
After Graduation Day in June of 1962, like so many of my classmates, I was not sure what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Vietnam was just starting up then along with the draft. So I had a choice to join the service, find a job, move to Canada, or go to College. My not-so-encouraging High School Career Counselor told me that I was not College material, and that I was better suited to drive a fork lift. So, I went to work. By 1964 Vietnam was really picking up momentum so I decided to join the Navy before getting drafted and I became an Airedale. I enlisted in the Navel Air Force and spent the next three years of my life on an Aircraft Carrier or in a Helicopter. After three tours of duty, President Johnson offered many servicemen an earlier out to make room for more new recruits. So, overnight I went from living in a Helicopter on an Aircraft carrier in Vietnam to the quite beautiful streets of Santa Clara. Talk about culture shock.
Thankfully, I ran into Stan (Lopez) Lorente and Richard Molica, two old friends from High School. They were both in College and also working part time. Thanks to them, they finally convinced me that our High School Career Counselor didn¿t know what he was talking about. So, I applied for my G. I. Bill, went back to work part-time and put myself through the University of California at San Diego. I received my Degree in Broadcast Management (Radio and Television) with a minor in Marketing in 1975.
While in College I joined a small Television Production Company made up of other students. We came up with Television scripts and programming in competition with other students from Southern California. The University decided to bankroll our program and broadcast it over the local Public Broadcasting Station, KPBS-TV. We p...Expand for more
ut on our first Television show. A sitcom called ¿Poppy¿s Place¿. After the program first aired, the University decided to enter the show in the Southern California Emmy Awards competition. Amazingly, we won! A small town would-be fork lift driver, now in college had just won an Emmy. This has been one of my proudest awards over the years.
I then spent from 1975 to 2000 in broadcasting working at local Television and Radio stations in Southern, Northern, and Central California. I retired from Broadcasting in 2000 and decided to start a new career in Real Estate. The first five years in Real Estate were very lucrative, and then as we all know, the Real Estate balloon busted.
Along the way I met and married a wonderful woman named Connie; who I met in my Television days. We have been blessed with three wonderful children. Our oldest son Beau would be 28 now, but unfortunately passed away at the age of 23, our daughter Cayla, who just turned 18, and our youngest son, Christian, our 6¿3¿ ¿baby¿ of the family at 16. We are incredibly blessed to also have a wonderful Grandson Beau J., named for his father, and is now four years old. I know, I know, here I am in my mid-sixties with two teenagers still living at home, while many of my High School classmates are long-time ¿empty nesters¿. Thank god for medication and wine! LOL
My wife is going on her 25th year of operating her Advertising Agency, and I¿m still in Real Estate. We are both looking forward to joining the ranks of many of my old classmates and hope to retire someday soon. Maybe after the last few little birds fly the nest. Of course, they¿re convinced they¿ll live with us forever! I¿ll be about 75 then and just in time for my next career move driving a fork lift at Wal-Mart!
