Bill's Story
I wanted to be a teacher and coach in a high school. I actually did get hired right out of school (Chico State) in the Alameda School District as a Motor Perception Specialist for K-12, and coached HS football and wrestling. I started to continued towards a Masters and teaching credental but the outlook for a living wage career was very bleak. I put my skills to work in sales and business. I played Footbal and wrestled through High school, Junior College and at Chico. I had a severe injury to my left knee my senior year, or I was heading toward a possible carrer in the NFL as a kicker and punter...oh well...
I loved the competitiveness of all the classes at Chico. As a PE major, you had to pass a performance test by exhibiting above average athletic skills in 13 of 17 different "main" sports just to be accepted as a Phys Ed Major.
I was awarded two years running the McConell-Tollette Academic-Atletic Schoalship for my academic success and my participation in a Division II Collegiate Sports Program, in my case Football. I Played running back, kicker and punter.
I enjoyed playing many intramural sports including making the col...Expand for more
lege all star team for flag football. we played aginst Sacramento State's all star squad in a highly publicised game that was covered by local tv and radio, complete with cheerleaders, band over 2000 fans....we lost in sudden death overtime....so close!
I was generally a few years older than my dorm mates and as a result often spent time listening to problems about relationships, school issues, family, job, etc and was happy to help if I could.
Having the Sacramento river just a couple of miles away was always a great source of fun and recreation and the fishing often was our source of food once I moved out of the dorms.
I was the manager of the off campus apartments I lived in, with my brother (All-American Wrestler two years running) and two other friends from "home". I also worked at the local mall selling sporting goods and was a Teacher's Aide for the Wrestling Coach, taking over several martial arts and self defense classes.
I loved college, learned so many things, especially how to think on my own, patience and planning, humility and the value of hard work and good friends.
Charachteristics that I hold close to this day.
