Bill's Story
Life
I was born in Kansas and moved around with my family to many states and countries. In 1976, we moved to Austin, Texas for what was thought to be the last time. In 1983, we moved for one last tour to Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. The four years in Japan were the defining times of my life, and I'll never forget it. In 1987, we moved back to the USA and I joined the USAF and served in Desert Storm on the C-5 Galaxy. Some time after I got out of the Air Force, I got married and had a beautiful daughter, Ariana Delenn Rehm, born June 13, 1996. My relationship with her mother took an unfortunate turn in 1997 and suddenly I was back on the market. In 1998, I moved to Denver and met Carolyn who became my wife on September 30, 2001. We moved back to Texas in August of 2003 and had a baby girl, Trinity Anne Rehm, on December 3rd. Ariana loves her little sister very much. We now live in Austin and we plan to stay for a while.
School
I went to school, but it didn't do me any good. I met a lot of great people, though.
College
I went to college, and I hope someday to have a degree. Fortunately I've been getting good jobs without the degree and I'm not in a hurry to finish. I think I'll get a degree in Party Management or Applied Loafing.
Workplace
My work history has been interesting. In high school, I did summer hire for the Air Force for three years, then in the last half of my senior year I was driving taxis. I joined the USAF after moving back to the States and served in Desert Storm. After I got out I worked a variety of jobs including hotel front desk clerk, used car salesman, grocery store checker, and quality assurance supervisor. I finally landed a steady job as a lobby receptionist for a state agency. After a couple years of that I got promoted to administrative assistant. Well, I could see I wouldn't be making the big bucks doing that, so I read a bunch of computer books, did some creative resume writ...Expand for more
ing, and got a contract job as a Windows NT technician with 3M. After that I landed a position as UNIX sys admin with BRC Healthcare. In 1998, I moved to Denver and worked for J.D. Edwards, first doing support for their OneWorld software on NT, UNIX, and AS/400 platforms. I tired of that and moved to the Advanced Technologies division where I helped develop new... technologies, and traveled around the country doing network performance tuning. I left there in 2000 for my dream job as an IT Director for Adam Aircraft Industries. Unfortunately, I was laid off after two years in the job, right when the IT market was in the toilet. I settled for a supervisor job with Best Buy and worked there nearly a year. My wife got a new job in Austin, so I transferred with Best Buy, but six weeks after I got to Austin I started my present job with Temple-Inland. I'm now a OneWorld/EnterpriseOne integration developer and loving every minute of it.
Military
My first day in the USAF was December 2, 1987. My life changed forever when I walked up to the dorm at Lackland AFB. I graduated basic training with honors, then went straight to Wichita Falls, TX for basic loadmaster training. My next school was C-5 loadmaster training in Altus, OK. Those were some great times... but it was only 8 short weeks. I was sent back to my unit for a few weeks, got my dollar ride, and then was shipped off to combat survival school at Fairchild AFB in Washington state. That was another defining moment in my life, let me tell you. I survived and began my OJT back at the unit. All told, I was on active duty for over a year. From January 1989 to August 1990, I was a 'reserve bum', flying twice as much as my active-duty counterparts. In August 1990 our unit was activated for Desert Shield/Desert Storm where I served with distinction, earning the Air Medal (among others). I left the service after Desert Storm in August of 1991 to pursue a career in the civilian world.
