Bill's Story
Life
After graduation, I went to work for Boeing in Seattle with Ernie McCamish. Got a draft notice, so joined the USAF and served 4 years, one in Korat, Thailand. Got out early to go back to College. Started at Alan Hancock, then moved to Cal Poly, SLO and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Went to work for HP in Palo Alto, then moved to HP in Corvallis, OR. We've been here since 1976. Retired in 2013, have a wife, Jeanette, two children; Tina and Dana. Dana has two children; Trey and Rachelle. It's been fun being a grampa for the last several years! We have been travelling the US and Europe as well as cruises to the Panama Canal and Australia and New Zealand.
I also race sailboats in my spare time. It's been really fun living in the Pacific NW with so many outdoor activities.
Workplace
It is now 2015 and I am fully retired for 1.5 years. Starting to learn how to deal with it. New experience and normal aging stuff. Some travel and time with grand kids whenever they let us. Still sailing a bit, but no longer racing my own boat unless someone twists my arm.
It is the year 2004 and I have now worked for Hewlett Packard for 30+ years. HP has given me the opportunity to work initially as a Production Engineer, then R&D followed by Marketing and then back to engineering and management. I had a two year stint doing Safety that has given me new ideas on how to communicate effectively and how to really car...Expand for more
e for safety both at work and at home.
I have been involved in some of HP's most profitable ventures including Calculators, Mobile Computers, and Printers. I feel most fortunate to have been so close to the technology revolution that has happened over the past 30 years. It will be interesting to see how our grandchildren deal with the new environment we have created. Will they improve the world, or cause it to further decline? I have faith that they will improve the planet!
Military
Tech School at Lowry AFB near Denver was fun. School wasn't difficult, and the friends made there were great! Experiencing Denver was also great, in fact, I ended up there again after my tour in SEA. Learning to be an instructor has been a lifelong payback for me. Public speaking is now easy because of my time there. My time in Korat Thailand was good on one hand and painful on the other. I missed my stateside friends and dating, but learned so much about the world and differing views on politics. I also learned a lot about myself there.
2015:
I retired last October Making it 41 years in Engineering, with most of it at Hewlett Packard Co.
2020
Still retired and moved into a smaller home and city lot in Albany, OR. Still sailing and enjoying travel throughout the world. Have been through the Panama Canal, visited Australia and New Zealand as well as two visits to Europe. Feeling very fortunate for my health and financial situation.
