Bill's Story

Life After graduating from MTHS I moved with my family to Colorado Springs. I started college at University of Southern Colorado (then Southern Colorado State College) majoring in Accounting. After a year there I decided I didn’t like accounting (before computers), but I didn’t know what to do, so even with a draft lottery of 241 I enlisted in the Air Force in 1973. The Air Force helped me get a BS in computer science in 1984, so half of my career was enlisted and I retired as a Captain. I didn’t move around much: Holbrook, Arizona; Ramstein AB, Germany; San Angelo, Texas; Scott AFB, Illinois, and finally Peterson AFB, Colorado. I married while in Arizona. We had two boys—Bill and Mike. I got divorced in 1984, and then married Jenine, my wife since 1988. I was big into running and other outdoor activities. I qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon twice, and I was the Colorado age group champion for two years in the triathlon. I’slowed down for a couple years and got fat, but I've gotten back into working out more and I'm wearing the same sizes that I did when I graduated from high school. Since retiring from the AF in 1993, I got my MS in ...Expand for more
Computer Science, and have been working in the information technology field since. I’m currently the Manager for Information Systems on a program for ITT Systems Division. Lucky me, I have my oldest son, Bill, working for me, and my other son Mike has a great job with another Defense contractor. Bill and I have been lucky to go on business trips to Boston and Norway together. Jenine and I have a cabin in the mountains of southern Colorado. It is about a 2 hour drive, but it is away from everything, and at about 9000’feet in elevation, it is a good place to get away from the summer heat. The cabin is only about 600 square feet, but it has running water, heat, a stove, and (hopefully) a solar power system soon. We have seen bear, elk, deer, and wild turkeys there. I never paid much attention to it while I was in school, but people that I’ve met since graduation have reminded my how little I was then. Now that I think about it, going into my Senior year I was still only about 5’ 4” and weighed in at 97 pounds. But I grew up soon after graduation to about 6’ 2”. My weight has fluctuated between 160 and 220, but I’m back down to 175 right now.
