Billy (vOz)'s Story
Life
Peace;
I innocently was born into this life with no forethought or effort on my part. I played a very small role in my birth, having nothing to do with the conceiving, and no control over the choice of parents, of which I have no complaints.
As I grew, I gradually discovered the way of things, though at an early age it appeared to me that I was on the other side of where I wished to be. In hindsight, I now recognize that I lacked a mode for creative expression.
When venturing deep into my inner being I was not able to effectively cope with my perceived limitations. Lacking confidence and insight I was powerless when I tried to gain admittance into my muse, I was at an impasse.
Confused and lost, if I was to survive I had to find a way out. Music was my out; I found my compass, direction, sense of purpose.
I joined a group of musicians and formed the band Katmandu. We never achieved any real successes in the music industry, mostly due to our unnecessary excesses; but I did discover that I had a hither to, unknown and untapped ability to create; writing music, lyrics and songs. This gave me a sense of self that I previously had never before experienced.
Of course I handled my new found and perceived fame poorly.
As it is with most inexperience unbridled youth, I chose to ignore the advice of those who knew better, self deception transported me into a world of false celebrity and self aggrandizement.
Encouraged by youthful fantasy I immersed myself in many regretful indulgences. These frolics ultimately caused my loved ones much distress of which hopefully I have atoned, though still remorseful. I continually beg their forgiveness and am privileged to have been granted absolution for past indignities.
As time is its own master I matured and found that I was fortunate to survive the turbulent excesses of youth, I persevered and prospered in my imperfect existence.
Reluctantly, I entered the world of commerce, picking myself up when fortune looked the other way. Hard work, effort, acceptance and much help from many good folks has been my saving grace.
I am pleased to report that I have survived, blessed with a loving wife, a successful business and a relatively wonderful life.
Having passed through the exuberance of youth, forgin...Expand for more
g onward towards the foggy facade of fate, I feel as if I am entering into a golden age of opportunity.
Fifty, feisty and fit, "Close to Sixty", I feel grateful to have experienced all that has come before me. Though I have accomplished much in a limited way, I still thirst for more. I find that in order to accomplish extraordinary things I first must help others to achieve their dreams.
My current interests are in the field of creative writing, and I continue with my life passion of music and songwriting.
I am an unpublished writer of screenplays, poetry, essays, etc, which I do for personal enrichment.
As I strive to achieve balance and focus in life, I have found peace and purpose serving those who share this space with me. Administering to the needs of family, friends and associates I am continuously encouraged by commitment, duty and love.
School
My Parents and I moved to Hazel Park in 1958 and lived in a house on Reynolds Street.
I attended kindergarden through six at Hoover Elementary, 7th and 8th grades at Beecher Jr. High, when for a couple of years we moved to North Felker Street, completing the ninth grade at Hazel Park High School.
My Mother, Brother and I moved to Ferndale in 1968 where I completed my High School education at Ferndale High. We lived on Stratford Street till apx. 1972/73 when I moved on and went to college.
College
I must confess that I don't have many memories of the students I went to college with.
I had been busy playing music with a group of friends from High School during those years, our band was called 'Katmandu", so regretfully I never took the time to enjoy the company of my collegial peers.
Though I do recall that I did have a few nice Professors, Class-members and Roommates, but unfortunately after school we never kept in contact.
Workplace
When I finished College in 1978, I moved to Mississippi to attend Law School at the University of Mississippi, but I never enrolled, instead my brother and I worked with our father at our families restaurant in Tupelo, "the birthplace of Elvis".
In 1991 my brother and I built our new restaurant facility on North Gloster Street in Tupelo, where we currently reside.
We have a good life-style and are relatively content with the way things are.
Peace
