Bill's Story

Life I retired from the Navy in 1996 after 26 years, 2 months and 25 days. I went back to college, carried a 4.0 GPA and proudly magneted my transcript to our fridge. After one semester I was hired and spent the next 7.5 years as the C.E.O. of a private, non-profit corporation on Whidbey Island, Washington. I left that in 2004 and moved to San Angelo, Texas where I am kinda, sorta retired. With my two sons grown, my dog dead and my cat having run away, my wonderful bride of 31+ years and I are enjoying being home alone. We seem to find plenty to keep us occupied. Workplace In the Navy I started out as a search and rescue swimmer/aircrewman in helicopters. After my first tour I went to P-3s, large 4-engine, land-based aircraft, and flew as an acoustic analyst. My best tour was an exchange tour with the Canadian Forces in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. During my career we lived in San Diego, the Bay Area, Canada, Hawaii, Southern Maryland and Whidbey Island, Washington. I was lucky enough to travel to some of the neatest places on the planet, most I can talk about. I always saw myself coming back to West Texas when I retired and San Angelo was always the spot I prefered. I was lucky enough to have put myself into a position where work was no longer an issue and I could retire while I was relatively young, 53.5 years of age. I have been a diabetic for the last eigjht+ years and it sure is easier to manage that without the stresses of full time work. In addition to my last "real" job, I "moonlighted"...Expand for more
as the Chief Information Officer for a sports media/production company in Seattle. We put on very large, multi-game basketball events at venues such as Key Arena in Seattle and Gonzaga University in Spokane. In addition to those regular season events, we also produced two events a year for AAU/Select teams during the NCAA spring and summer evaluation periods and produced a high school sports television program that quickly became the number-1 rated TV show on weekends in the Puget Sound area and received an Emmy nomination. That was a fun experience for the most part. I was also the Washington state representative for the McDonald's All-American basketball team for about 5 years. I am working part time for the local newspaper here in San Angelo covering high school sports and get to run around West Texas to small towns. I cover 2A, 1A and six-man schoolsl and have a blast in the tiniest towns in West Texas. They love their h/s sports and I have been able to meet some great folks. I consider it a major success that I have not hit a single deer when making my late night speed runs back to San Angelo after games. I've had some close calls, but the brakes in my truck and my cat-like reflexes have worked wonders. I also seem to get most of the big golf tournaments in the area...now that is easy money and they have free beer for the most part. If you ever find yourself in San Angelo, we're in the book. I know some good places for barbecue, chicken fried steak, Mexican food and catfish. I don't dine; I eat!
