Billie's Story

If I got honest and shared my story, you would see a life much like a soap opera. Like the soaps, it involved getting married, getting divorced, having children, and working hard. There were lots of music festivals, camping and fishing trips. Our family became "host family" for students for about five years. They were mainly from Japan. Once we had four students living with us. One of them had an "emergency" host family need. Her host family wasn't working out and she couldn't handle going to McDonald's every night. I worked as a Legal Secretary for 15 years. My training was given by the Office Manager who was 86 years old. She had been my mentor and a great inspiration for older employees. She was a good example that a person could enjoy working for many years. Once I was allowed to create a position as a "Work Flow Coordinator" for a 30-attorney law firm That was a challenge but I enjoyed the interaction with staff and covering the lawyers' workload. When secretaries were ill or had vacation time, I would "spread" the work with other in-house secretaries or find temporaries from agencies. I actually used my shorthand skills at that law firm. (Reading it later was a different story since it had been years without use.) I just realized that all I'm doing is giving you my resume rather than personal stories. Gee, do you think I'm avoiding personal life subjects! Just remember Liz Taylor's life without the "acting ability, the looks or the money." It was mainly chaos and drama. Ok, here's something personal. One law firm allowed me to organize a new baseball league that was named the ...Expand for more
"Lawyers Baseball League" because there was already an "Attorneys Baseball League." I got to use my old cheerleading techniques from junior high school. One participant on our team wouldn't catch the ball in the outfield because she might "break her finger nails." I didn't have to worry about that because I didn't have any nails. Another law firm gave me the privilege of being an "Administrator, Personnel Manager and Legal Secretary." That was a learning experience for sure! I really loved those 14-hour days and commutes. I had the privilege of graduating college in 2004. I craved learning and completing that high school dream. Caring for my ill mother for several years was also important. She was kind, never complained and funny at times. Sometimes she would laugh and not be able to stop for a long time. She would always say "don't make me laugh, Billie." Soon we were both laughing so hard that we couldn't stop! Laughing can be very contagious! Also, it's a great way to release stress! A few years earlier, I had volunteered as a care giver for a patients with the Alzheimer's Disease. I learned what to look for i.e., possible abuse conditions at adult family homes. I saw care givers who didn't really care about the elders. I would love to check adult family homes as an "Elder Advocate." That would involve not only possible abuse issues but helping elders with their feelings and understanding their rights. That way I would use my past legal secretarial skills and actually make use of my Degree! I actually like "paperwork" and also writing poems. So, now you know the rest of the story.
