Billy's Story

My Life has been good. My Kids Shelley Lives in Houston, TX Chris Lives in Oklahoma City, Ok Kyle Lives in Littleton, Co. Pat and I currently own a retail store "As Seen on TV and More" in the Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, TX. Frisco is in the Dallas FortWorth area near Plano/McKinney, TX. I have had a good life since we graduated. I taught school for a couple years after graduating from La. Tech. teaching was not something I enjoyed so we moved to Houston. I worked for the Greater Houston YMCA for about 10 years.. We were starving to death with 3 kids so when one of the presidents for BAKER Hughes, who was a member of the YMCA, offered me a job in the oil field I decided to leave the YMCA which I loved but couldn't turn the opportunity down even though what I was doing with the "Y" was so enjoyable. I went to for Lynes, Inc. a division of Baker Hughes in 1974 and stayed for 12 years. I traveled all over the world, if there was oil wells being drilled any where in the world I have been there. What a great job. I never thought I worked a day during the 12 years while the job required you to be on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week, For once I wasn't starving doing something that I loved. I thought I wanted to be in upper management with the third largest oilfield service company in the world but the politics got to be something I did not enjoy the farther you got up the ladder. So what do you do when the job gets to be a JOB? You move on. So my wife Pat and I bought a convenience store, motel, and rentals in Durango, CO. We bought the oldest operating business in Durango "Elmore's Store. The store was on a landmark corner in the state of Colorado, named, of course, Elmore's corner. It is still called that in all the newspaper articles in the Durango. What a great place to live! We stayed there for 10 years when Pat decided she wanted to leave Durango. When the word got out that we might be interested in selling CONOCO made us an offer we could not refuse. We had 3 prime acres on the busiest corner in the four corners area. So we retired bought a motor home and set out to see this country together since during all my travels Pat was stuck at home which she loved. The old saying of "absence make the heart grow fonder" was one that was really true for us. She loved her time alone, when we were together we enjoyed each other a lot more. The wheels and white lines were to be to much for Pat, she wanted a home that didn't move. So when we got to Trinity, TX to visit my dad we boug...Expand for more
ht a home so we could be near him for the rest of his life. Boredom set in for me so we bought another convenience store hoping we could pay the bills and maybe sell this one like we had done in Durango. Well five years later some guy from Pakistan made us an offer and we moved to Dallas Fort Worth. We bought another business that pays our bills it called "As Seen on TV and More" . You got it a store that sells the stuff you see on TV with a lot of other widgets. . I only work this business one day a week for about 5 hours and take care of the book work so I guess you could say I am mostly retired, which is a word we need to have a conversation about. We bought this business just to pay the bills and for now its doing that. So here we are at 71 having lived the dream, loving most of it. We have had some struggles along the way, with some losses along the way but if I had to make a "Bucket List" it would be really short. I have done more than anyone from Haughton would have predicted. I have been way more successful than I would have guessed in High School. So if I die tomorrow or the next day or whenever the good lord decides to take me, I have left it on the field like Coach Weaver asked us to do. I have tried to live my life like my Mother and Dad taught me which was to do what you say you are going to do, when you said you were going to do it, and to do it as well as can. I have given it a 150% my entire life, never intentionally hurting anyone except maybe myself, as my body now attests. Don't feel sorry for me I have loved every step. A handshake is all you ever needed for my Mother, my Dad, or Me. I just hope that life has been as good for all my classmates as it has been for me struggles and all. My legacy is my kids!! My only regret is that I did not spend as much time with my kids as my Mother and Dad spent with me I just hope they realize how much I love them. I Enjoyed the reunion just wish we could have made it last for several days so we could have visited more. Billy PS to Mrs. Adkins Mrs. Adkins you are the best! Thanks for all the effort! If it hadn't been for you and the second chance you gave me, no telling what would have happened to me. Please don't grade this I wrote it from my heart and never have been able to put the comma's, periods nor capitalize the right letters as they should be, a writer I am not. You knew I would never be that! HA! Thank God for Spell Check, Secretaries and Teachers like YOU. You gave me a chance. THANK YOU
