Bob's Story
I've lived a great life! I was born and raised on the Irvine Ranch in Southern California. My family moved to Santa Maria, California half way through my junior year in High School. Santa Maria was a good fit for me and very similar to Irvine. I loved sports and Santa Maria provided a great place to compete and grow. I played Football, Basketball and Baseball in High School and Football and Baseball at Hancock Junior College. I was able to stay free of injury and won MVP honors in both Football and Baseball my sophomore year. I was very fortunate to sign a professional baseball contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I was under contract with the Dodgers for 9 years and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I played in Tri-Cities, Washington in the Northwest League for Duke Snider. my first professional championship ring. The following year I played for the Santa Barbara Dodgers in the California League. Norm Sherry was our Manager. I was having a pretty good year hitting .318 when I was drafted in the Army. I got a break when at the last minute I was sent to Fairbanks Alaska instead of Saigon, Vietnam. Uncle Sam wanted me to be an MP in the frozen Northwest. I spent two freezing winters in Alaska where the coldest temperature I experienced was 104 degrees below freezing. I have a lot of interesting stories to tell about my experiences there, but you'll have to ask me about them at our coming class reunion.
After I served my country for two years I was able to go back to playing baseball in the Dodger organization and by some miracle I was able to make the "AA" team in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
