HOLLY, Michigan â Downtown wasnât the only place where food, fun and friendship took center stage Aug. 1 during Sights, Sounds & Tastes of Holly. Add family to that mix earlier in the day when generations of Greniers and McPhails gathered for a family reunion.
Nearly 200 family members attended the reunion, organized by well-known Holly residents and cousins Marlo Davidson, who is a Grenier, and Barb McKay, who is a McPhail.
âBarbâs mother and my father are brother and sister,â said Davidson.
The reunion was held at Gordon McKayâs farm, where the McKay children grew up, including Ken McKay, owner of McKayâs Hardware in Holly.
âMy family lived next door for 10 years,â said Davidson. âWe, as the older generation, thought it would be nice if our kids could know cousins like we did. Itâs a start.
âBarbâs parents were the glue in the family because of the farm,â Davidson said. âDuring hay season families would come to Holly to help bring in the hay and various other large farm projects.

s they all drifted, but the McPhails stayed around because of the farm,â she added. âThat was a great place for those of us my age.â
The oldest member of the family in attendance was Peg Highfield, 93, who currently resides at Holly Woodlands. She was presented with a corsage by the youngest member of the family, Matt Weeks, 3 months.
Davidson said her goal was to have representation from all of the grandfathersâ siblings, 11 of whom came to the United States from Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada. One sister never married and died young.
âI was able to get 50 percent; I was happy,â said Davidson.
Family members attending the reunion came from Michigan, including four families of about 14 people from Westland, Chelsea, Stockbridge and Canton that Davidson and Barb McKay have never met. Others came from Virginia, Maryland, Vermont, California, Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, and one couple from Toronto Canada.
âWe were fortunate to have a lot of the services needed for such an event within the family, including Dan McPhail, a DJ from Flint. Our meat was cooked by Jim Roberts, Holly, who does pig roasts and Ken (McKay) provided tents and chairs, along with coolers and other serving equipment. And our moderator was former channel 12 newsman Frank Benesh from Farmington Hills.â".
