Bob's Story

Hi Everybody! Leave a note if you stop by - it's always great to hear from an old friend! Life has been pretty good so far. I kept pursuing my dream of being an airline pilot and it turned out great! After finally finishing college in '85, with an Associate of Science degree in Commercial Flight (Mt. Sac), and then a BS degree in Aviation Administaration (Cal State LA), I started flying full time. My first job? Towing banners at Chino Airport for a whopping $7/hr! That was painful, and I even had to stay with my parents for a few months. But then I was able to get a job flying Convair 440's in Dallas for much better money. That led to a job flying DC-8's for Emery, which led to a couple of other DC-8 jobs, flying all over the world. That was a really fun and adventurous time, but I wouldn't want to do it again! Eventually I had enough time and experience to get hired by United in early '89, and I've been there ever since. I've flown DC-8's, DC-10's, B-727's, B-747's (I'm on that plane now), and the A-320. Life there has had it's ups and downs, but overall it's been pretty good. I feel very lucky. I've had some fabulous adventures, and been paid well in the process. Then along comes 9/11. I was an A-320 captain then, and I was in NY on 9/10! We almost cancelled the flight home (mechanical problems) and we would have been downtown when the chaos hit. Thankfully, we decided to take the plane home, and I made it back at about 2 a.m. Then the phone starting ringing a little after 6, and nothing in the airline business has been the same since. That one event started the downward slide of all of our pay and benefits. We had our pay slashed by about half, and we lost most of our pension 'promises'. My big takeaway from all that? In today's world, nobody can be single skill set or single income source dependent. You have to have an 'emergency parachute' in todays world! So, following my own advice I worked part time as a real estate appraiser. I also concurrently worked on the broker's license. I really w...Expand for more
asn't sure if United was going to survive the hit. The Bush administration sure didn't help like they promised. After the smoke cleared and it looked better I realized that I didn't like doing appraisals that much (too much driving!), and finished the brokers license requirements. I still do some commercial and residential real estate work, and I have a small office down the hill from our house on PCH. I also have a couple of hundred websites, which is a story in itself. I won't bore you with the details. Check out a couple of my lending sites - like homeloanrates.com or homemortgagerates.com ! Just click on any of the links and I get paid! Thanks! BTW - Those are what are called 'parked pages'. Not really true websites, but I'll develop those two later into active lending sites. Wow, I can't believe you've read this far! You'd better leave me a note! So, overall I'd have to say that life has been pretty good for me! I met a beautiful girl with a heart of gold (Trudie, on a blind date!), and together we're raising our kids in Dana Point. We moved here back in '95, and besides some of the 'OC snobiness', we love it here. I still go to Salt Creek all the time. There isn't much that I would change! Here's one last Los Altos related story though - I went to my 'counselor' Mr Becker when I was a junior. I told him that I wanted to maybe go to the Air Force Academy. He almost laughed in my face, and said that I couldn't possibly do that because I didn't have the grades. The grades part was true, but I didn't like the way he made me feel about it. So the next year I graduated a semester early and started at Mt. SAC, with 19 units of A's! Then in the Fall semester I earned 22 units of A's, and made the top of the Dean's list out of 23,000 students! There was even a small cover story in the Highlander, which I gladly placed in his mailbox! In your face Becker! I still laugh about that! Just goes to show the power of 'making somebody wrong'! Looking forward to seeing you all at the reunion soon! Cheers, Bob
