Bob's Story
To my BHS Classmates of 1967,
Please indulge me, for on the advent of our 55th anniversary celebration, I am compelled to tell you:
I came to Whitehall Junior High from a small grade school, smack in the middle of our 8th grade year:
the newness of it all; the freshness of it all; new friends, new enemies.
It left an indelible impression. In fact, I can still name every person in my 8th grade home room and where they sat for that period. Though one last name continues to escape me.
When starting 9th grade, I thought it odd that I’d made it to high school, but still was attending a Junior High.
For many of us, or all of us, shared memories abound!
Remember your first high school romance? I certainly do mine! It was short-lived, but exhilarating and memorable nonetheless. (You know who you are, and I will see you Friday/Saturday night).
Mischief and making out at the Whitehall show (I don’t remember a single movie);
Friday nights at Pinchera’s after the game;
Cruising Eat ‘n Park;
The County Fair at South Park, signaling the start of a new school year.
Canteen dances, the Junior Playboy Club, the Grove, the Lebanon Lodge, and Sully’s.
We listened and danced to Aretha, the Temps, S...Expand for more
am & Dave, and Top 40 hits on KQV, WZUM, and WAMO. Then we were obliged to include the mopheads of the British Invasion: The Beatles, The Stones, and rest of the Mods.
Styles and attitudes began to change.
From “Burn Lebo” to Prom to Graduation (I believe I was the only boy to march not wearing a tie),
we witnessed (and were part of) the onset of a transformative social revolution and the emergence of a strident counterculture, sparked by changing norms and an unpopular war. We each chose a side and likely have remained there to this day.
There is so much more, but I’d be trying your patience to be sure.
Whatever path you’ve chosen, I tell you in earnest:
If I personally added anything at all positive to your experience -- my pleasure, you’re welcome.
If I hurt, offended, or disappointed you in any way, I’m truly sorry.
Whether we were friends, enemies, acquaintances, or strangers,
Whether we knew each other or not;
Whether we liked each other or not;
Whether we even remember each other or not;
Whether you are still with us or not;
For all the collective and individual contributions you made to the mosaic of my life experiences, THANK YOU!
I love you all. Stay safe.
