Bob's Story
"let us not talk falsely now the hour is getting late"
Bob Dylan
This all started when my son gave me an iPod shuffle a couple of years ago. Downloaded a bunch of my old favorites and as I listened over and over alot of memories came back and I began to wonder about people I've known.
Two things: I'm pretty much oblivious to social situations, and I've been
far luckier than anything I did to earn that luck.
Graduated from Rutgers in 69... was in ROTC...expected to go in right away...was a full year later when orders came..pretty standard; Ft Benning for Infantry School, 9 months stateside and then a year in Vietnam. About 6 weeks before I was supposed to go overseas, everyone at my post (Ft Ord Ca) got frozen stateside in support of the volunteer army. Luck.
Got a job with a company where I spent the next 27 years. Fell in lust, got married, fought for 6 years, had a son and got divorced. Got custody of my son when he was 3 and spent the next 8 years as a single parent. Best and most fun thing in the world. Mother vanished from our lives. Luck
1990 met a woman with 3 older boys (one already in college), and remarried. Still married to her and still enjoy her company the most. Luck
The job: was in Sales, Admin, customer support, tech support and computer support. Ended up...Expand for more
as computer operations manager... had the realization that I was defining my life by my job and that sucked, so when the opportunity came to take an early retirement package in 2000 I took the money and ran. Luck
We sold our house in North Jersey, found a great little rural town in central Pa with a university and settled in. Have many friends who are Professors and enjoy talking with them and getting their take on the world.
Barb got involved in the local Democratic party and is now county rep to the state committee. (we're both very Liberal). I went back to work
after 5 years due to rising health insurance costs, but have been doing kind of "brain dead " work.
Our greatest joy is our 8 grandchildren; 3 in FL who we don't see too often and 3 who live about 30 miles from us, and who we see quite often.
Their ages are 21, 17 and 12, and all are hilarious boys. We also have 2 grandsons in De, 7 yo and 9 months.
My biological son just got married to a wonderful girl, bought a house in Wilmington De and is doing quite well. He's got a bunch of friends from college, Univ of DE, in the area as well as his wife's family.
And that's where it stands now. Hope anyone who reads this has had the same kind of luck I've had, deserved or not. Maybe see some of you if we have a 50 year reunion.
