Bob's Story

Life Dear Friends from Carbon High, Hi, this is Bob Taniguchi, graduating class of 1963. I live in California now, but but I've moved plenty of times. After my formal education from the U of U and Utah State, I began teaching in Las Vegas (1968), served for Uncle Sam (1970-72), and lived and taught in Malaysia (Southeast Asia, 1973-76). I returned to Price in 1976 and taught at East Carbon, Mont Harmon, and eventually ended up at College of Eastern Utah. In 1989 we moved, and now I live in Merced in the heart of California's agricultural region. I married Nancy in 1974. She's a native of the Washington D.C. area and we met overseas. We had children later in life, so they are relatively young. Dash, my son is 29 and works as a production manager for a biotech firm in Sydney, Australia. He's been there for one year now and loves being "Down Under". My daughter, Darcy, is a Ph.D candidate at Scripps Insititue of Oceanography, studying phytoplankton. She will finish in 18 months. Both are single, so no grandkids on the horizon. I am now 67years old and have been teaching for 40 years. My years at CEU were very rewarding, as well as my 22 years here at Merced College. Although I teach math, I feel my greatest contribution was at CEU when I became Athletic Director from 1986 to 89. We did lots of innovative things. I'm still a "jock" at heart playing lots of golf and tennis. I have volunteered exten...Expand for more
sively for the Japanese American Citizens League, JACL. In 2010 we raised $350,000 and built a Memorial located at the Merced Fairgrounds commemorating the 4669 people of Japanese ancestry who were forcably removed from there homes and sent to these Assembly Centers before being send to Concentration Camps for 3 years. Google "Merced Assembly Center" for more information. My wife is a history professor at California State University, Stanislaus, about 30 miles north of Merced. She was also a faculty member at CEU and did lots of local research. She has written two books, both about Carbon County. The latter book, "Castle Valley America: Hard Land, Hard Won Home." won a national book award. If you read it you will learn more about our beloved County and perhaps your relatives may be mentioned. Nancy just retired in January, and is writing a third book. Price will always be my psychological home. I have a sister and some nephews living there so I try to visit every chance I get. I always run into old friends every time I visit. Not too much has changed there, which is always a plus in these fast moving times. I consider myself very fortunate to have grown up in a time and place were life was truly simple and relatively innocent. Price is full of good, honest, hard-working people. When my life gets out of whack, the place I can go in my mind is Price, Utah to find some peace. My best to all of you. Bob
