Bob's Story
Family
I'm from a large family so you may know my siblings: Katherine, Peggy, Edith (Ede), Steve, Dan, Dot and Mike. I am sure Peggy, Ede and Steve went to Sonoma High. Dan, Dot and Mike went to Kelso High.
I married Susan Whisnant from Castle Rock, WA. We lived in Alaska for almost 20 years. Now we live back in Castle Rock. I am active in Freemasonry.
School
I didn't get good grades in anything but math & electronics. The most useful class I took in HS was typing. As a software developer and consulting I do a lot of typing. The math classes were good but that was more fun than work.
My family moved a couple of times back then and I ended up going to three different Senior High Schools.
My first crush was Valerie in Junior High. I never did get up the courage to even talk to her. But I understand she is doing well and has a nice family in Nevada.
If I could it all over again I would skip HS altogether. College was much better. The Profs and instructors didn't impose the school's sports over the lessons. With all the sport hype gone, I actually learned something.
Growing up I never thought I would go to college. My family was poor and I never took any AP or college prep courses. HS Councilors suck. I had no idea what I would be doing after HS.
In the summer of 71 I worked for two women who changed my life forever. They called me into their office one day and asked where I was going to college. Finding the question odd, I explained. At the end of this interview they aske...Expand for more
d me what I would major in if I managed go to college. I responded with "Computers" because of my love of mathematics. I wanted to get into programming computers.
A few weeks later they called me into their office again to tell me that they had talked to LCC admissions and financial aid on my behalf. I was told to go there the next day and sign the paperwork for the fall term.
Although it wasn't quite that easy, I did fill out all the forms and did end up enrolling with Data Processing as my major. I graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors in 73.
So far I have built a 35+ year career out of that education and I am deeply in debt to those two women.
Workplace
I have worked since I was 13 at one job or another. Since college my career in computing has been very gratifying. As the DP coordinator for LCC I managed the computing resources between academic and administrative needs. Then, I joined International Paper Comp as a Programmer/Analyst. My startup computer consulting/service bureau corporation survived 4 years but died quietly in 1980 and I moved to Alaska where I was contracting to the AK Dept of Education. They hired me as Data Processing Manager in 1984.
Then in 1999 I moved back to WA and became a consultant with Excell Data, a division of CompuCom, in the greater Seattle area.
Today I am a Senior Consultant with EMC Consulting and travel around the USA working with various client companies. See my profile on LinkedIN web site at w w w.linkedin.com/in/bobwooldridge
