Bob's Story

I've been in academics most of my life - UCD, Colorado State & Penn State for degrees. Worked at Texas A&I,Kingsville as a wildlife scientist, then a department head at Mississippi State, then at Texas A&M and then as a Dean of the College of Natural Resources at NC State. Time off for 3 years in the Marines during Vietnam (wounded twice) and another 21 years in the reserves through Desert Storm. Also involved with a lot of conservation NGO's - former national president of The Wildlife Society, served on boards of The Nature Conservancy, Boone & Crockett Club, Longleaf Alliance, North Carolina Wildlife Federation, etc. Married and divorced - now married again - for the past 41 years. Three sons (hers, mine, and ours); one 12 year-old grandson, a 9 year old grand daughter, and a 7 year old grandson - all who live in Denmark. Retired in October, 2012. Really loved my job - also have traveled the world a lot - China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Columbia, Mexico, Cost Rica, Canada, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Greece, Iceland, En...Expand for more
gland, Denmark, Germany, France, Mongolia (now that was a trip!) and a few more. We travel to Europe annually to see the grand kids. Also hunt and fish, race canoes and kayaks, like to read, yoga and dance. Still write some articles and book chapters on wildlife policy and the history of conservation. Spend summers as an ATV instructor at a Boy Scout Camp and taking Scouts to the new high adventure base in West Virginia. I did an annual Hope Floats kayaking trip - 210 miles over 8 days down the Neuse river in NC - part of the Relay for Life, raising money for the American Cancer Society.. Did that for 8 years. Had to stop when Covid came along (I’ve not had it). I became a Buddhist a few years ago. I took a 6-week and the a 2- year course at the Kadampa Center in Raleigh, and later joined the Won Temple in Chapel Hill. The former is a traditional Tibetan-type temple and the latter is a Korean Zen-type. I’ve taken additional Zoom courses and have given dharma talks (go to wonbuddhismnc.org and scroll for my two talks.

Something is killing our bees. There are 4 of these lethargic bees - they won’t move - within a yard of each other. All on this 4-year old Salvia plant. We don’t spray anything. The little honeybees are unaffected. Three

Back in Bellingham, WA today. Had a great stop in Ketchikan (photo). Saw pink salmon spawning in a stream. Only a foot deep water, but 4 sea lions swam up and were feasting on the salmon. Saw lots of whales on the cruise
