Robert's Story
Hello, my fellow classmates (and page visitors) -
I'm still very happily married (42 years!) to my true soul mate, the former Cathi Raneri (also Class of '65.) We have lived in Sonoma County since I returned in 1976 after completing law school, and in NW Santa Rosa since 1991. Our daughter Laura (36, as I write) and our son Jon (34) are "out of the nest." Laura has been a concierge and property manager at resorts in Nicaragua, Grand Cayman, and Hawaii (the big island) following some wine industry jobs in Sonoma County. Jon has a home in east Portland, Oregon and does some sound engineering for musicians and options trading. Neither have married and we have no grandchildren yet. If and when that happens, we expect to be ridiculously devoted & engaged grandparents.
Me? Following college, law school and an "interesting" career as a lawyer, I worked for a couple of local companies, conducted wine tours throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties (great fun!), and during semi-retirement did some residential property investing and remodeling until the 2006-08 mortgage debacle and scarce investment money made that very problematic. I invest in precious metals, and trade options, and am still fascinated by (too?) many things in life.
I try to keep my weight within reasonable constraints, I always vote (even though it's appears increasingly pointless), I recycle and I read - mostly internet articles on economics and many other subjects, plus spiritual books. I try to laugh heartily at least once a day - usually from something in my own life that mirrors a scene on Seinfeld. I work at exercising everything that matters. And like most other parents, I worry tremendously about the directions in which our ...Expand for more
country and our planet have moved and the "brave, new world" our younger people will face.
Kathleen and I had planned to relocate three years ago to the Portland area. But, she is no fan of five-plus months of overcast weather and drizzle, preferring a climate about 20 degrees warmer on average than I, so that presented some major hurdles and we decided to pass. She has a good job she likes here, so for the time being we remain in Sonoma County ... which, with all its "faults" (yes, I'm guilty of felonious punning) is still a terrific place to live. Frankly, though, when I reflect on the statistical probability of a major earthquake hitting our area, it's a question mark I don't like having in my future. Our current preference would be to relocate to maybe the Sierra foothills (because of all the friends we still have), eastern Arizona or western New Mexico in the next few years (but I've also seriously considered the Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tenn.)
I still have not fulfilled the dream of designing and building my own home or completed the many other things on my well-worn "To Do" list. It is been said "There is no time like the present" to commence efforts toward changing one's situation, and being a devotee of Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer, I do believe in unlimited possibilities. Moreover, as Morgan Freeman aptly observed in The Shawshank Redemption, "Either get busy living, or get busy dying."
Thanks for reading this lengthy saga and for indulging my outsized ego.
I send my affections to each of you . . . all the varied, special and unique souls I have been so fortunate to know - some for as long as 58 years!
Warmly,
Robert (1976-present)
