Robert's Story
After graduation from Bonita, I became a biology major at the University of Redlands, where I also sang in the University Choir and Chapel Singers. I ventured northward during my junior year, studying at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, but returned to graduate from Redlands in 1971. My interest in environmental science led me to a relatively new Ecology graduate program at UC Davis, where I completed both my master's and doctorate under the guidance of an inspiring professor who was an internationally-known expert in wildlife pest control (particularly rodents). During my graduate school years I worked both with rodents and coyotes. I accepted a job offer from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in August 1978, where I spent 9 years on the faculty as an Extension Wildlife Specialist (doing publi...Expand for more
c education in rat, mouse, gopher, and prairie dog management) and teaching a class in wildlife damage management. In 1987, I had the opportunity to return to California as Director of the Hopland Research & Extension Center, a UC research facility in Mendocino County, where I had conducted my field research as a grad student. While in Nebraska, I met my wife Janice, a native of Alabama, who is a musician currently teaching at Mendocino College.. We were married in 1986, and our three children (two daughters and a son) were born in Ukiah, where we continue to live. Our daughters currently live in Orange County; one works at Disneyland and the other at the South Coast Repertory Theater; our son graduated in 2020 from Berklee College of Music in Boston. I retired from the University of California in 2014.
