Bobby's Story
Life
Although I was known as Bobby at Lanier, I have been Robert since then. So, if you look me up anywhere else, that is how you will find me listed. After graduating from Lanier, I spent a few years in college being the same uninspired student I had always been. About midway through my second year, however, I decided that in order to get something out of my education I would have to put something into it. So, after a couple of years of fun and games, I finally got serious about school. To abbreviate the long story, I graduated from Auburn in 1972 with a double major in business admin and sociology. During the process of discovering my fascination with sociology I also discovered that I was more comfortable with the liberal ideas I found there than the conservative ones I had grown up around. the University of Michigan, where I earned a Ph.D. I became a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982, where I earned tenure and spent three years as department chair. In 1991 I moved to Texas, where I have been ever since. I am currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Texas-Arlington.
Along the way, I had two children. Katie, who will turn 25 this summer, is a graduate of Oberlin College with degrees in music and comparative literature. She now lives in Chicago, where she works for a local newspaper and composes and plays music. My son, Nick, is a sophomore at the University of California at Berkeley majoring in linguistics. Julia and I were divorced in 1993. She lives in Jackson, Mississippi. I am now married to Carol Thompson, who is a sociology professor at TCU. We live in Fort Worth, Texas. I return to Montgomery once or twice a year to visit my parents who still live there.
